Following the death of a 31-year-old MSc Physics student on campus, the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi has constituted an external investigation committee to conduct a thorough inquiry into the incident. The high-level panel will be chaired by retired Delhi High Court Judge Justice Mukta Gupta. The move comes amid sustained student demonstrations on the campus demanding transparency, accountability, and a comprehensive review of administrative protocols.

The newly formed external committee brings together experts from legal and psychiatric disciplines to ensure an impartial probe. Justice Mukta Gupta will lead the team, which also features Professor Pratap Sharan, Head of the Department of Psychiatry at AIIMS New Delhi. To ensure the student body has a direct voice in the proceedings, four student representatives have been included as members. The Registrar of IIT Delhi will function as the secretary and convener of the committee.
The panel is tasked with interacting directly with students, faculty members, and administrative officials across relevant departments. By engaging with individuals who were in contact with the deceased student or familiar with campus procedures, the committee aims to reconstruct the sequence of events leading up to the tragedy and determine whether any institutional gaps contributed to it.
Protocol Review and Two-Week Deadline
In addition to examining the specific circumstances of the student's death, the committee will evaluate existing institutional protocols and safety mechanisms. It will assess the effectiveness of grievance redressal, mental health support systems, and administrative responses during student crises. Based on its findings, the panel will formulate recommendations to strengthen campus support structures and prevent similar occurrences in the future.
IIT Delhi has requested the committee to complete its investigation and submit a detailed report within a two-week timeframe. Institute authorities emphasized that the findings of the report will form the foundation for reviewing current operational frameworks, fixing responsibility where appropriate, and implementing systemic reforms across the campus.
Police Investigation and Legal Proceedings
Parallel to the internal inquiry, law enforcement agencies have initiated criminal proceedings in the case. Delhi Police registered a case against unknown persons under legal provisions relating to abetment to suicide. According to official details, the 31-year-old postgraduate student died after allegedly jumping from the sixth floor of an academic building inside the institute premises.
Investigators are examining whether any individuals or external factors provoked or compelled the student to take the extreme step. Police teams are inspecting the site, analyzing security camera footage, and reviewing personal communications to ascertain the exact sequence of events and clarify if any foul play or criminal coercion was involved.
