Renowned Hindi cinema director Sanjay Gupta has passed away at 59 years of age, leaving behind his wife Anu and two children. Filmmaker Ashok Pandit shared the news of his demise through social media, stating that the director suffered a head injury at his residence. While detailed circumstances surrounding his sudden passing have not been fully disclosed, the tragic news has cast a heavy shadow of grief across the Indian film fraternity, where he was celebrated for helming landmark thrillers such as Kaante, Shootout at Lokhandwala, Shootout at Wadala, and Kaabil.
A Romance Tested by Separation
Beyond his cinematic achievements, the filmmaker navigated a personal life filled with dramatic twists and emotional resilience. His romance with Anu blossomed in 1994, leading to a wedding on August 18, 1997, after dating for two and a half years. Although their early marital years were harmonious, severe emotional distance crept in by 2003. The growing friction eventually drove the couple to make the difficult choice of legal separation and divorce. Even during the years apart, his affection for Anu endured unresolved.
Underworld Calls and the Secret That Sparked Suspicion
The director publicly addressed the breakdown of his marriage during a conversation on author and journalist Hussain Zaidi’s YouTube channel, Hussain Zaidi Files. He explained that a critical phase of his life coincided with indirect links to the underworld. A friend had offered him an empty apartment where he would sit waiting for specific phone calls to manage communication with underworld-linked contacts. Because he kept this hazardous activity completely hidden from his home, the lack of transparency took a devastating toll.
His unexplained absences and tense silence led Anu to suspect that he was having an extramarital affair with another woman. Unable to reveal the dangerous reality of his underworld conversations, the secrecy fostered deep mistrust that ultimately fractured their domestic life and triggered their divorce.
Reuniting at the Altar in 2009
Time eventually healed the rift between them. Realizing that their bond remained unbroken despite six painful years of separation, the couple reconciled and tied the knot once again in 2009. The abrupt loss of a storyteller who gave Indian audiences some of their most memorable action thrillers has brought heartfelt tributes from colleagues and fans nationwide.
