Bollywood megastar Amitabh Bachchan shared the fascinating backstory behind his famous surname during a recent episode of the popular television quiz show. He explained how his father, the legendary Hindi poet, made a deliberate choice to step away from traditional caste identities.
Nostalgia on the Quiz Stage
During an interaction on the show, when a contestant mentioned her roots in Prayagraj and her education at St. Mary's Convent School, the veteran actor took a trip down memory lane. He recalled that St. Mary's Convent was also the very first school he attended. This conversation paved the way for him to narrate how his family surname came into being.
The Reason Behind the Surname Change
Amitabh explained that when his parents took him for school admission, the application form included a mandatory column for caste. His father, Harivansh Rai Bachchan, was a staunch opponent of the caste system and detested identity being tied to social stratification. Refusing to fill in a traditional caste name, his father wrote down 'Bachchan' in that column instead. This spur-of-the-moment decision eventually became the family's permanent surname and an integral part of Amitabh Bachchan's identity.
Literary Legacy and Early Beginnings
At the time of his birth on October 11, 1942, in Allahabad, the actor was originally named Amitabh Srivastava. His father Harivansh Rai Bachchan remains one of the greatest luminaries of Hindi literature. His masterpiece 'Madhushala' became immensely popular, while works like 'Madhukalash', 'Nisha Nimantran', and 'Satrangini' earned him widespread literary acclaim. His powerful poem 'Agneepath' continues to resonate with audiences today. For his immense contribution to Hindi literature, he was honored with the prestigious Padma Bhushan in 1976.
