Amitabh explained that when his parents took him for school admission, the application form included a mandatory column for caste. His father, Harivansh Rai Bachchan, was a staunch opponent of the caste system and detested identity being tied to social stratification. Refusing to fill in a traditional caste name, his father wrote down 'Bachchan' in that column instead.
