Renowned actress Mandira Bedi has recently spoken candidly about the most challenging phase of her life and the tools she used to overcome it. Following the tragic loss of her husband, film director Raj Kaushal, in 2021, Mandira was left struggling with immense personal grief and mental turmoil. She has now shared that professional therapy and counseling served as a vital support system, acting as a healing balm during the most difficult moments of her journey toward recovery.
A Long-Standing Relationship with Therapy
During the trailer launch event for her upcoming film, Max, Min and Meowzaki, Mandira clarified that seeking therapy was not a decision she made only after the loss of her husband. The actress revealed that she has been consulting with therapists and counselors for nearly 20 years. According to Mandira, whenever she feels mentally overwhelmed or senses that her emotional balance is slipping, she does not hesitate to seek help from professionals.
The Initial Reaction from Her Mother
Recalling her personal journey, Mandira highlighted how perceptions around mental health were vastly different two decades ago. She shared, ‘Therapy, counseling, and understanding myself better have been an integral part of my life for a long time. When I first went for a therapy session about 20 years ago, my mother's immediate reaction was to ask what was wrong with me. When I told her that I needed to express what was going on in my head, she suggested that I could just talk to her instead. I had to explain that there is a significant difference between casual conversation and professional guidance.’
Therapy as a Healing Balm
Speaking emotionally about the deep sorrow caused by Raj Kaushal's death, Mandira explained why she continued to rely on therapy after such a massive tragedy. She noted that recovering after such a sudden loss would have been significantly harder without support. Mandira stated, ‘Whenever I felt that something was off in my life, I sought the help of therapists and counselors. It has always been immensely beneficial. When I lost my husband, therapy proved to be a healing balm for me, and that is precisely why I leaned on it during that period.’
Remembering the Journey with Raj Kaushal
Mandira Bedi and Raj Kaushal were married in 1999. The couple had a son named Vir and later expanded their family in 2020 by adopting a daughter. The family faced a devastating blow in June 2021, when Raj Kaushal passed away suddenly due to a heart attack at the age of 50. Today, Mandira continues to balance her professional career and the upbringing of her children, crediting her mental clarity and emotional resilience to the consistent support she received through therapy.
