The entertainment industry has rallied around veteran singer Daler Mehndi following a massive controversy during his live performance at the Kunjapuri Mela in Uttarakhand. Breaking her silence on the matter, noted singer Ila Arun has strongly condemned the incident, expressing deep sorrow and anger over how the celebrated artist was treated on stage.
Speaking to the media, Ila Arun shared that the entire film fraternity, music community, and countless fans are deeply distressed by the episode. Describing Daler Mehndi as a brother and a close friend, she emphasized his immense contribution to popularizing Sufi and Punjabi music globally. While noting that she was not fully aware of every detail of what transpired at the venue, she stressed that the allegations leveled against him and the manner in which he was spoken to were completely unacceptable.
Directing criticism toward the event planners, she pointed out that if organizers or sponsors had any genuine concerns regarding the singer's health or capability, the matter could easily have been handled privately behind the scenes. She suggested that management should have communicated discreetly with his secretary instead of creating a public spectacle, as handling such delicate situations gracefully is a fundamental responsibility of event organizers.
Expressing deep concern for the veteran singer's health and emotional well-being, Arun noted that artists are inherently sensitive people who can be profoundly impacted by public humiliation. She warned that such stressful confrontations could have had severe health consequences, questioning what might have happened if the veteran artist had suffered a major health emergency under such immense pressure.
Reflecting on her association with him, she mentioned learning core values of self-respect and the sanctity of an artist's bond with the audience from Daler Mehndi himself. She added that while a performer should step back if they are truly unwell, the disrespectful treatment meted out to him in public has left the artistic community outraged and deeply disappointed.
The controversy originally erupted on October 18 when Daler Mehndi was performing at the Kunjapuri Mela in the Tehri district of Uttarakhand, where his concert faced sudden disruption. Reports indicate that Uttarakhand cabinet minister and local MLA Subodh Uniyal intervened to halt his performance, alleging that the singer had consumed alcohol before stepping onto the stage of an event dedicated to Goddess Durga. Since the incident, numerous artists have spoken out to express solidarity with Mehndi over the public fallout.
