Cinema exhibition across Tamil Nadu has received a major regulatory boost just ahead of the festive rush of Diwali. Chief Minister Thalapathy Vijay issued a formal executive order on Tuesday, November 3, permitting theatres and multiplexes to stage as many as 6 shows every single day for upcoming Tamil cinematic releases. This relaxed schedule will stay operational across the first seven days following each film’s theatrical debut, paving the way for significantly higher audience capacity and round-the-clock footfall during high-demand holiday frames.
Extended Exhibition Window from Dawn to Late Night
Under the freshly notified administrative directive, screening schedules across both standalone theatres and multiplex screens will undergo a dramatic operational stretch. The earliest morning screening has been authorized to kick off at 6 AM, while the permissible timetable wraps up as late as 2:30 AM early the following morning. Tamil Nadu had maintained a strict hiatus on early morning shows for more than 3 years. This policy reopening arrives immediately prior to the scheduled theatrical arrival of major festive titles including ‘Seen’, ‘Mookuthi Amman 2’, and ‘Ramayana’.
Cinema Trade Bodies Secure Swift Government Clearance
The regulatory intervention comes in direct response to unified appeals tabled by key regional trade delegations. According to official disclosures, collective representations were advanced by the Tamil Film Active Producers Association, the Tamil Film Producers Council, and the Tamil Nadu Theatre and Multiplex Owners Association. Expanding the permissible screening tally to 6 shows per day stood at the very top of their joint submission. Producer and distributor G. Dhananjayan highlighted the turnaround on social media, noting that the delegation met the concerned minister on October 27, yielding an official order within seven days. Praising the responsive approach of the administration, he noted, “This is a classic example of how a government acts swiftly for the welfare of its people and industry.”
Evolution from the 1957 Exhibition Regulations
The regulatory architecture governing theatre timings in the state traces back directly to the Tamil Nadu Cinemas (Regulation) Rules 1957. Historically, that regulatory framework restricted commercial movie venues to a baseline quota of four daily shows. Subsequent policy revisions under the current political administration expanded this standard by allowing five shows per day during the debut week of fresh Tamil titles. A five-show cap had also been extended to weekends, gazetted public holidays, and festive dates, serving as the immediate precedent for the newest step up to a six-show structure.
