Security authorities in Poland have thwarted an alarming plot aimed at assassinating the country's top leadership. A man accused of planning an attack against Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk alongside Defence Minister Wladyslaw Kosiniak-Kamysz has been taken into custody following swift intervention by law enforcement agencies.
High-Level Security Alert Over Credible Threats
The interior ministry confirmed that police had secured credible intelligence regarding imminent attacks directed at both Donald Tusk and Wladyslaw Kosiniak-Kamysz. Recognizing the severe danger surrounding the situation, intelligence and security services convened an extraordinary emergency session on Sunday. Officials assessed the threat environment as deadly serious, acknowledging the urgent need to neutralize any potential harm to executive members of the government.
Warning Email Triggered Swift Investigation
The operational plan was uncovered after critical communication was flagged by the State Protection Service, the specialised agency tasked with safeguarding government ministers. Interior Ministry spokeswoman Karolina Galecka explained that the protection service forwarded an email carrying explicit information about the planned attack directly to the police. This vital intercept allowed investigators to act rapidly before any operational stage of the plot could unfold.
Suspect Apprehended in Lower Silesia
Law enforcement officials tracked down and arrested the suspect in Poland's Lower Silesia province. Jacek Dobrzynski, speaking on behalf of the Special Services Coordinator, informed local media that the detained individual is a Polish national. Emphasizing the perilous nature of the uncovered plot, Dobrzynski noted that investigators were dealing with a strong likelihood that these threats could have materialized into actual execution on the ground.
Prime Minister Commends Police Readiness
Reacting to the successful apprehension of the suspect, Prime Minister Donald Tusk openly commended the law enforcement personnel involved, expressing gratitude for their swift and decisive action in executing the arrest. Tusk has been steering Poland's government as prime minister since 2023, having earlier governed in the same role from 2007 through 2014. On the broader international stage, he also served as president of the European Council between 2014 and 2019.
