A tragic shooting during a rave party in the northern Swiss canton of Aarau early Sunday left one woman dead and five other individuals injured, prompting an ongoing manhunt by local authorities. Police confirmed that the suspect remains at large following the violent incident, while investigation teams actively pursue the unidentified perpetrator. Authorities stated on X that the motive and precise circumstances behind the crime remain unclear as the search continues. According to the canton police, a 22-year-old woman succumbed to her injuries at the scene. Meanwhile, four men and one woman, ranging in age from 24 to 27, were transported to a hospital with injuries varying from minor to severe. Police noted that all the victims involved are residents of Switzerland.
Shooting erupted at 2:30 AM
Police spokesperson Pascal Wenzel informed the Swiss public broadcaster SRF that law enforcement received reports of gunfire in Aarau, the capital of the canton, at approximately 2:30 in the morning. The location sits 46 kilometers or 29 miles west of Zurich. According to reports from SRF, the gathering known as 'Aarau Rave VOL. 7' was taking place at a horse-racing track in the Schachen district of Aarau when the violence broke out. Following the incident, the fire department cordoned off a large perimeter surrounding the venue. A heavy emergency response unfolded at the site, with numerous police officers, firefighters, and ambulances deployed, while local residents were instructed to steer clear of the area. Reports from the German news agency dpa indicated that police in neighboring Freiburg, Germany, also assisted Swiss authorities in the search for the suspect.
Partygoers initially mistook gunfire for fireworks
The Swiss newspaper Blick reported that attendees at the rave initially mistook the sound of gunshots for fireworks until someone shouted for everyone to get down. The publication noted that the shooting occurred immediately after the rave event had concluded. In the aftermath, police escorted all surviving participants to a nearby gymnasium for safety. Authorities have since appealed to potential witnesses, requesting anyone who captured video footage or photographs of the incident to come forward and share them with the investigation team.
