Authorities have arrested a man on suspicion of murder following the death of a British woman while she was holidaying in Greece earlier this year. Details of the arrest emerged during the opening of an inquest into the incident at Doncaster Coroner's Court.
Investigation and Arrest Details
Detective Constable Mike Tilley of South Yorkshire Police informed the court that a suspect had initially been arrested on 12 June on suspicion of murder before being released on bail. The individual was subsequently re-arrested last weekend after fresh evidence came to light. Following the hearing, the police force confirmed that the suspect is 69 years old and was detained in Worcestershire. The investigating officer noted that the probe is complex because material gathered by Greek authorities remains held abroad and several potential witnesses are foreign nationals.
Legal Proceedings and Pathology
The court heard that further pathological work is likely required as the investigation continues. The Crown Prosecution Service has not yet determined whether British or Greek authorities will ultimately lead the inquiry. The exact cause of death for the 66-year-old resident of Bawtry in South Yorkshire was not disclosed during the initial hearing.
Community Tributes and Next Steps
Area Coroner Louise Slater expressed her condolences to the grieving family and announced that the case will return to court in February 2027 for a progress update. Earlier in June, the mental health charity Doncaster Mind paid public tribute to the victim, describing her as a much-loved supporter. Representatives for the charity shared that she and her late husband brought considerable joy to the local community by decorating their home into a festive Christmas attraction each year, noting that their generosity touched countless lives.
