The narrow lanes of Islampur market in Muzaffarpur are already buzzing with shoppers days before Sawan begins, as women and young girls throng the stalls in search of green bangles and traditional lac bangles known as lahathi. Shopkeepers, anticipating the seasonal rush, have stocked up on fresh designs and colours well in advance.
A market known for decades, now drawing buyers from far away
Islampur market has long been recognised as a hub for bangles and other adornment items. That reputation grows stronger through Sawan, with women travelling in from distant areas specifically to shop here. Green bangles and lac lahathi remain the biggest sellers, since green is considered an auspicious colour tied to good fortune during the month of Sawan, making it the top choice for married women.
From traditional lac to waterproof lahathi
Local shopkeeper Mohammad Saqib said the crowd of customers had begun swelling even before Sawan officially started. He said the market now carries designs to suit every customer's taste this year, with a wide collection ranging from traditional lac lahathi to modern, waterproof versions. According to Saqib, women are increasingly favouring waterproof lac lahathi because it holds up for a long time without wearing out, keeping its shine intact even during the rainy season. Shopkeepers have therefore made special arrangements to stock a dedicated waterproof collection this time.
Bangles priced from Rs 30 to Rs 5,000
Shopkeepers say the bangles and lac lahathi on offer at Islampur range in price from Rs 30 to Rs 5,000, giving customers plenty of options across every budget. Alongside simple designs, bangles featuring stone work, kundan and zari craftsmanship are also drawing attention in the market, appealing to buyers looking for something more premium and distinctive.
Shopkeepers don't want anyone leaving empty-handed
Saqib said shopkeepers had already ordered sufficient stock in advance, keeping customer preferences in mind, so that no woman has to return disappointed without finding the bangles she wants. He added that whichever design customers ask for, a matching collection will be made available to them.
