On the day following Diwali, while people across India mark Govardhan Puja, the streets of Hyderabad witness an eight-decade-old cultural spectacle. Known locally as the Sadar Sammelan or the buffalo carnival, this annual gathering stands out as a unique celebration representing pastoral heritage and communal harmony. Crowds gather in large numbers to witness colossal livestock displayed alongside vibrant cultural performances, making it an event unlike any other in the country.
Roots Traced Back to 1946 During the Nizam Era
The origins of this gathering date back to 1946, during the reign of the Nizam, when community leader Salandri Nyam Choudhary Mallaiah Yadav laid its foundation. Over the decades, what started as a community gathering developed into a major public carnival. While Narayanaguda's YMCA ground serves as the focal venue for the main festivities, the celebratory atmosphere extends throughout the night across other prominent localities, including Khairatabad, Musheerabad, and Secunderabad.
Royal Diet and Elaborate Styling for Prized Bulls
The primary attraction of the festival features massive Murrah bulls transported from Haryana and Punjab. Weighing anywhere between 1,500 and 2,000 kilograms, these animals receive specialized care and high-protein nutrition, consuming almonds, pistachios, apples, and 20 to 25 liters of fresh milk every day. In preparation for public presentation, handlers massage the animals with mustard oil, paint their horns in bright shades, adorn them with peacock feathers, and fit decorative brass bells and ghungroos around their necks. Celebrated bulls known by names such as Sartaj and Golu frequently serve as the key highlights of the display.
Rearing Stunts Accompanied by Teen Maar Beats
As darkness sets in, the rhythm of traditional drums and energetic local Teen Maar beats fills the grounds. Handlers and akhada wrestlers coax these heavy animals to stand upright on their hind legs following subtle hand and verbal signals. While the balancing act carries considerable physical risk, the demonstration draws loud cheers from spectators. Alongside animal handling exhibitions, local wrestlers demonstrate physical conditioning through traditional wrestling moves, lathi combat techniques, and swordplay displays.
Cash Rewards and Trophies for Exceptional Handling
Beyond being an exhibition of livestock fitness, the Sadar gathering functions as a broad social congregation that brings together thousands of residents across varied backgrounds. At the conclusion of the event, organizers evaluate the entries based on physical conditioning, appearance, and discipline. The handlers and owners of the top-performing bulls receive official commemorative shields along with cash awards amounting to lakhs of rupees.
