The International Pushkar Fair is scheduled to commence on November 10 in the Pushkar region of Ajmer district. Traditionally renowned for its vibrant camel and horse trade, this year's festival will feature an added highlight as goats step into the spotlight. Aimed at encouraging livestock rearers and promoting indigenous animal breeds, organizers are introducing a Goat Beauty Contest, bringing a novel attraction to the historic gathering.
Criteria for the Pushkar Sundari Title
The standout feature of the livestock segment will be the crowning of the 'Pushkar Sundari' title, awarded to the goat possessing the most superior physical structure and overall appearance. Participating goats will be evaluated based on coat color, physique, height, and body condition. The competition will showcase two of Rajasthan's most famous goat breeds: the Sirohi and Sojat. This platform offers local rearers a prominent opportunity to demonstrate the unique traits and breeding quality of their livestock to visiting buyers and tourists.
Revival of Tradition and Regional Breed Heritage
Dr. Naveen Parihar, an official from the Animal Husbandry Department, stated that goat competitions were once a feature of the Pushkar animal fair, though the practice was suspended in intermediate years. The department is now restoring these contests to the event itinerary. Dr. Parihar highlighted that Ajmer and Nagaur districts are celebrated for breeding Sirohi goats, while regions across Pali, Sirohi, and Bhilwara are extensively known for rearing both Sojat and Sirohi breeds.
Boosting Rural Employment and Animal Husbandry
According to Dr. Naveen Parihar, the revival of these competitive events aims to foster healthy motivation among rural goat keepers to maintain superior genetic stock. By presenting high-quality breeds at a major festival, livestock owners stand to gain better commercial visibility and improved market valuations. This initiative is anticipated to encourage sustainable animal husbandry practices while opening fresh avenues for employment and household income across rural communities.
Competitions for Nagauri Bulls and Calves
Beyond camels, horses, and goats, the Pushkar Fair will also host competitive events for pairs of Nagauri bulls and young calves. These animal contests will be structured into specific age-based teeth classification categories, including adant (milk teeth calves), four-teeth, and six-teeth divisions. This categorization ensures structured evaluation based on the physical development and working capacity of the animals.
