The spiritual city of Varanasi is witnessing immense fervour as devotees celebrate Shri Krishna Janmashtami across its iconic shrines. Widely recognized for the resounding chants of Har Har Mahadev, the city of Kashi is currently echoing with enthusiastic slogans of Jai Shri Krishna. Since early morning, huge crowds of worshippers have been gathering at various temples dedicated to Lord Krishna. At the Kashi Vishwanath temple, devotees arriving for worship are receiving the blessings of Laddu Gopal alongside Baba Vishwanath. Similarly, long queues of visitors have formed outside the ISKCON temple located in Gurudham, with crowds expected to persist well into midnight.
Special Evening Rituals at Kashi Vishwanath Temple
A series of elaborate celebrations will commence late in the evening at the famous Kashi Vishwanath temple complex. The festivities will begin with a devotional music performance, or Bhajan Sandhya, held at the Mandir Chowk area. Precisely at midnight, the ceremonial birth of Lord Krishna will take place amidst traditional chants. Following his divine birth, a sacred abhishekam using multiple holy liquids will be performed. Laddu Gopal will then be placed inside the sanctum sanctorum of Baba Vishwanath. Following the early morning Mangala Aarti the next day, devotees will be granted a rare joint darshan of Baba Vishwanath and Lord Krishna.
51 Substance Abhishekam and 108 Dishes at ISKCON Temple
Grand arrangements have been finalized for the Janmashtami festival at the ISKCON temple situated in Gurudham, Varanasi. A magnificent mahabhishekam of Lord Krishna will take place at midnight on Friday. A specially prepared mixture containing 51 distinct substances will be used during this sacred ritual. These ingredients include pure cow milk, holy Gangajal, fresh curd, cow urine, and extracted juices of various fruits and flowers. The abhishekam process will start at 10 PM using ornate silver urns and will continue uninterrupted until midnight.
Once the grand abhishekam concludes, the deity of Laddu Gopal will be adorned in magnificent traditional attire. Following the decoration, an offering comprising 108 different culinary delicacies will be presented as bhog. The entire temple premises have been decorated with exquisite floral arrangements ahead of the festival, creating captivating tableaux that draw heavy praise from visiting devotees. Additionally, a 24 hour non-stop chanting session, or akhand kirtan, commenced late last night and will run through midnight tonight. The temple building has also been illuminated with colorful decorative lighting.
Tableaux and Household Celebrations Across Varanasi
The spirit of Janmashtami extends far beyond the major temples into local neighborhoods and households across Varanasi. Special preparations are underway in private homes to mark the birth of Laddu Gopal. Across various public squares and quarters of the city, vibrant tableaux depicting key life events of Lord Krishna have been installed, serving as major attractions for local residents and visiting pilgrims alike.
