Expanding its wearable lineup, Apple has introduced its latest smartwatch models, retaining their familiar physical appearance while incorporating a faster S11 processor, enhanced health monitoring tools, and the watchOS 27 software update initially detailed during WWDC last June.
Upgraded S11 Processing and Health Monitoring
Both the Series 12 and the Ultra 4 operate on the upgraded S11 chip, which the company states delivers improved central and graphics processing speeds alongside more responsive virtual assistant capabilities. Furthermore, the wellness-tracking suite has been expanded with a redesigned Health application that incorporates a new Longevity tab, featuring metrics such as Health Age and a Readiness score to help users monitor their daily condition.
The health sensor array has undergone a complete redesign, utilizing additional electrodes for more precise data collection. Photodiodes are now structured in a circular arrangement to capture light more effectively, and new light-emitting diodes enable heart rate measurements every 5 seconds, providing a continuous stream of cardiovascular data throughout the day.
Ceramic Case Comeback and Aluminum Finishes
Among the most prominent updates is the return of the ceramic case for the Series 12, offered in pearl white and night blue finishes. Apple initially introduced a ceramic variant with the Series 2 in 2016 as an alternative to the discontinued gold edition, though production of the ceramic casing ended in 2020. Constructed from compressed zirconia and alumina powder and polished using a diamond slurry, the ceramic material is reportedly four times more durable than stainless steel.
Meanwhile, the aluminum variants are manufactured using recycled materials and come in black, light gold, space gray, radiant gold, natural titanium, and a newly introduced dark bronze finish.
Software Enhancements and watchOS 27 Features
This hardware arrives alongside watchOS 27, which will also be distributed to owners of existing compatible smartwatches upon the release of the new devices. The software refines the previous Liquid Glass interface and integrates a capable virtual assistant driven by system-level artificial intelligence.
Following industry trends toward automated transcription tools, a new summary feature can translate and transcribe real-time conversations. During a demonstration, a restaurant server recited daily specials, and a diner was able to review a complete text transcript directly on the display.
The operating system also introduces a dynamic application grid displaying five suggested shortcuts, along with new physical gestures. A single-handed tap selects widgets, a double-tap navigates through them, and a wrist flick returns the user to the primary watch face, silences timers, or dismisses alerts.
Battery Performance and Fitness Additions
Battery endurance remains consistent on the standard model, while the Ultra variant extends operating time up to 50 hours. A proactive battery conservation tool automatically suggests disabling unused background functions to preserve power, though users retain the option to manually reactivate those features within the settings menu.
Fitness tracking remains a core priority, with the Workout Buddy application now operating independently from nearby mobile devices and supporting the Spanish language. Users can log detailed weightlifting sets, while cycle tracking introduces dedicated monitoring and alerts for perimenopause and menopause transitions. Alongside these additions, the real-time Walkie-Talkie voice communication tool is being permanently removed with this software release.
