The Goa bench of the Bombay High Court has convicted Tarun Tejpal, the former editor of Tehelka magazine, in a 2013 sexual assault case. A division bench comprising Justice Neela Gokhale and Justice Amit Jamsandekar set aside the 2021 trial court order that had acquitted him of all charges. Delivering its verdict on an appeal filed by the Goa state government, the High Court held that the session court's previous judgment was legally flawed.

While pronouncing the verdict, the division bench noted that it had set aside the trial court judgment and found Tarun Tejpal guilty of the offenses. The bench further informed the counsel that if arguments regarding the quantum of sentence were presented on the same day, the court would hear them on priority. Background of the 2013 Elevator Incident
The case dates back to November 2013, when a female colleague working with Tehelka accused Tarun Tejpal of sexually assaulting her inside an elevator at a five-star hotel in Goa during an event. Following the complaint, Tejpal sought anticipatory bail to prevent police custody; however, the court rejected his plea. Subsequently, law enforcement authorities arrested him on November 30, 2013.
From Trial Court Acquittal to High Court Conviction
After a prolonged trial lasting nearly seven and a half years, a Goa sessions court acquitted Tarun Tejpal in May 2021, citing a lack of sufficient evidence. The prosecution strongly challenged this acquittal before the Bombay High Court, arguing that the sessions judge had misdirected the evaluation of evidence. Accepting the government's appeal, the High Court overturned the acquittal and held Tejpal guilty.
