Former Indian Air Force Group Captain and Vir Chakra recipient Abhinandan Varthaman has embarked on a new professional journey in civil aviation. After leaving military service, the decorated fighter pilot has joined a private regional airline as a commercial pilot. He is presently undergoing the necessary training required to command commercial passenger aircraft.
Transitioning from Military Aviation to Commercial Flights
Abhinandan Varthaman, who was honored with the Vir Chakra in 2021 for his exceptional gallantry, associated himself with Goa-headquartered airline FLY91 in August. Following his departure from the Indian Air Force, he opted to shift his aviation expertise to commercial passenger operations. He is currently completing specialized training modules for the airline's aircraft fleet. Specific details regarding his exact role remained undisclosed, as a spokesperson for FLY91 declined to comment on individual staffing details, citing employee privacy policies.
The 2019 Dogfight and Vir Chakra Citation
The fighter pilot achieved global prominence in February 2019 during an intense aerial engagement between India and Pakistan. Demonstrating remarkable tactical skill, he shot down a Pakistani F-16 fighter jet. During the dogfight, his own aircraft was hit, resulting in his capture across the border. He was held in Pakistani custody for three days before being released and repatriated to India amidst significant diplomatic pressure. His Vir Chakra citation explicitly commended his extraordinary devotion to duty during the high-stakes aerial encounter.
About FLY91 Fleet and Operational Bases
The regional carrier where Abhinandan Varthaman has initiated his commercial flying career is a relatively new player in Indian civil aviation. FLY91 commenced its commercial flight operations in March 2024. The Goa-based airline currently operates a fleet of six ATR 72-600 aircraft.
