In a major legal development in the 2013 sexual assault case, the Goa bench of the Bombay High Court on Thursday convicted Tehelka magazine founder Tarun Tejpal, overturning his earlier acquittal by a trial court. The High Court sentenced Tejpal to 10 years of imprisonment along with a financial penalty of Rs 5 lakh. Following the ruling, Sunita Sawant, an officer with the Goa Police and the investigating officer in the case, confirmed that Tejpal has been granted a period of two weeks to surrender before the authorities. Reacting to the court order, Tarun Tejpal released his first statement describing the verdict as deeply disappointing and announcing his decision to challenge the conviction in the Supreme Court.

By reversing the lower court's acquittal order, the High Court held Tarun Tejpal guilty of sexual assault and imposed a 10 year prison term alongside a fine of Rs 5 lakh. Detailing the post-judgment legal process, investigating officer Sunita Sawant of the Goa Police stated that the convict has been allotted two weeks to surrender himself to legal custody.
Tarun Tejpal Claims Political Conspiracy and Outlines Appeal Strategy
Responding to the High Court ruling, Tehelka founder Tarun Tejpal expressed strong disagreement with the outcome. Presenting his position on the verdict, Tejpal remarked, "We are very disappointed with this verdict." He asserted that key evidence demonstrating his innocence was not given proper consideration by the bench, maintaining that sufficient evidentiary proof exists to establish his complete exoneration.
Tejpal alleged that he has been the victim of a political conspiracy and a vendetta spanning 13 years, attributing the case to retaliation against Tehelka's investigative journalism. He highlighted that his legal team had contested the charges in the trial court for 7.5 years, culminating in his acquittal at that stage. Expressing continued faith in the judicial system, Tejpal confirmed that he would carry the case to the Supreme Court, where he intends to place all supporting evidence before the judges.

The High Court verdict also drew an official response from Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant, who welcomed the court's decision. Commenting on the judgment, Chief Minister Pramod Sawant stated, "Today's decision by the Goa bench of the Bombay High Court is a victory for justice."
Chief Minister Sawant elaborated that because the underlying event occurred within the state of Goa, the Goa Police and the state government bore a continuous responsibility to monitor the case closely. He emphasized that his administration pursued the prosecution with complete seriousness and diligence, ensuring that the judicial process reached a conclusive and just resolution.
