The official season for filing Income Tax Returns (ITR) is currently in full swing, and taxpayers across the country are busy compiling essential documents, consulting with Chartered Accountants (CAs), and organizing their financial details. However, skipping one critical step could lead to significant complications. It is imperative that every taxpayer reviews their Annual Information Statement (AIS) before proceeding with the final filing of their ITR. According to the Income Tax portal, the AIS provides a comprehensive view of all financial information associated with a taxpayer.
What Is the Purpose of AIS?
The primary goal of the AIS is to display complete financial data to the taxpayer before they file their tax returns. It is designed to promote voluntary compliance and enables the seamless pre-filling of returns. Additionally, the statement acts as a deterrent against non-compliance, ensuring transparency in financial reporting.
The Components of AIS
The AIS is categorized into two distinct parts. The first part contains general taxpayer information, including the Permanent Account Number (PAN), masked Aadhaar number, the taxpayer's name, date of birth or date of incorporation, mobile number, email address, and registered address. The second part of the AIS is more detailed, covering TDS and TCS information, Statement of Financial Transactions (SFT) details, tax payments, outstanding tax demands, refund status, and other relevant financial data.
Step-by-Step Guide to Accessing AIS
To view your AIS before filing your tax return, follow these steps
- Visit the official website of the Income Tax Department at www.incometax.gov.in.
- Log in using your registered credentials to access your dashboard.
- Navigate to the homepage and locate the Annual Information Statement (AIS) menu.
- Click on the 'Proceed' button to be redirected to the dedicated AIS portal.
- Once on the portal, click on the AIS title to view your specific statement.
Alternatively, you can access the statement by logging into the portal, selecting the 'e-File' menu, choosing 'Income Tax Return', and clicking on 'View AIS'.
Tracking Your Activity History
Taxpayers also have the ability to track their history on the platform. By clicking on the 'Activity History' button on the AIS homepage, you can obtain a summary view of all actions performed on the compliance portal. The system automatically generates a unique ID, known as an Activity ID, for every action taken. Under this tab, you can view the specific date of the activity, a detailed description, and other relevant metadata for your records.
