A shocking case of blatant food safety violations has come to light in the city of Vadodara, Gujarat. An illegal factory manufacturing dog biscuits was being operated stealthily inside a residential building located in the Wadi area of the city. Acting upon complaints received from locals, a team of food safety officials rushed to the spot and carried out a thorough inspection. During the checking process, several serious irregularities were uncovered, prompting the department to dispose of the available stock on the spot and issue strict orders to shut down the unit completely.
Unlawful manufacturing in residential zone
The unauthorized production and packaging of dog biscuits was taking place right in the middle of a populated residential neighborhood in the Wadi locality of Vadodara. Following a formal complaint, the food safety department team inspected the premises and found that the entire operation was being run without any required legal standards or valid licenses. What raised serious concerns was the fact that the packaging prominently displayed a vegetarian symbol, while crucial details such as the date of manufacturing and the expiry date were completely missing from the packets.
Business continued despite cancellation of license
According to the food safety department, complaints had been lodged against this particular unit earlier as well, following which its official food license was duly cancelled. Despite the cancellation, the operators chose to defy the law and continued their commercial activities unabated. Recognizing that the business was operating illegally even after losing its license, the department conducted a re-inspection, disposed of all the existing material present at the site, and ordered the immediate shutdown of the facility. The food safety department has now initiated formal legal proceedings in this connection.
Official statement and liquor destruction in Gujarat
Providing details about the crackdown, senior food safety officer Ankur Shah stated that the factory was improperly using a vegetarian symbol on products that lacked any manufacturing or expiry dates. He emphasized that although their food license had already been cancelled following earlier complaints, the illegal operations were resumed regardless. He confirmed that a re-inspection was carried out to dispose of all available goods on site and the concerned unit has been ordered to halt all work permanently.
In a separate development on Friday, illegal liquor bottles and cans valued at over 4 crore rupees were destroyed using road rollers across two cities in Gujarat. It is noteworthy that Gujarat functions as a dry state where the manufacturing, sale, possession, and consumption of alcohol are strictly prohibited by law. As part of enforcement drives, illicit liquor worth 2.03 करोड़ rupees was destroyed in Jamnagar, while alcohol and other intoxicants worth 2.91 करोड़ rupees were crushed and destroyed within Vadodara city itself.
