A Hindu woman and a Muslim woman successfully donated their kidneys to each other's spouses in a paired organ exchange. This cross-religion kidney swap has not only brought relief to two families but also highlighted the immense potential of paired organ donations in overcoming compatibility hurdles.
The Medical Challenge and the Swap Solution
The two male patients, a 45-year-old Hindu man residing in Ahmedabad and a 42-year-old Muslim man from Udaipur, were both suffering from chronic kidney disease that had advanced to end-stage renal disease. Medical evaluations confirmed that organ transplantation was the only viable path to sustain their lives. Although family members from both households immediately volunteered to donate their organs, initial clinical evaluations revealed that neither family had a medically compatible donor for their relative.
Facing a severe dead end due to immunological incompatibility, the medical team proposed the option of a kidney swap transplant. Comprehensive medical scans, blood matching, and tissue testing revealed an ideal cross-match: the Hindu donor woman was a precise medical match for the Muslim patient, while the Muslim donor woman was fully compatible with the Hindu patient.
Counseling and Simultaneous Surgeries on July 9
Following the positive compatibility results, transplant coordinator Rahil Shah and the clinical team conducted thorough counseling sessions with both families. After understanding the procedure, legalities, and medical steps, both sides provided full formal consent. On July 9, the surgical teams performed simultaneous dual-transplant operations to ensure complete fairness and medical safety for both donor-recipient pairs.
The multi-disciplinary medical team leading this complex surgical effort included Dr. Sonal Dalal, Dr. Javed Vakil, Dr. Ketan Shukla, Dr. Himanshu Patel, and Dr. Bhavin Mahetaliya. This procedure stands as the very first kidney swap transplant executed at Sterling Hospital.
Post-Op Recovery and Discharge on July 18
Post-operative monitoring showed rapid clinical progress for both recipients. At the time of their hospital discharge, the patients' serum creatinine levels stood at 1.26 mg/dL and 1.30 mg/dL respectively, indicating that both transplanted kidneys had achieved healthy baseline functioning.
