Traffic police in Gurugram seized a motorcycle on Sunday that had 58 challans pending against it, with the total outstanding fine touching Rs 3,83,000. The bike was caught during a vehicle-checking drive carried out near Supermart.
A special drive against repeat offenders
A senior traffic police official said the department is currently running a special enforcement campaign targeting vehicle owners who repeatedly violate traffic rules. Officers are taking action under the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988 against those who have failed to clear challans pending for a long time, and Sunday's checking near Supermart was part of the same drive.
Driver had no documents to show
Zonal officer for the Supermart area, Assistant Sub-Inspector Amit Kumar, was deployed with his team for routine vehicle checking when they stopped a motorcycle and asked the rider to produce his documents. The rider could not produce a single valid document, prompting police to check the vehicle's record.
Most of the 58 challans linked to helmet, insurance and pollution violations
The check revealed that 58 challans had been issued against the motorcycle under various provisions of the Motor Vehicles Act, adding up to a pending fine of Rs 3,83,000. Most of these challans were for carrying a pillion rider without a helmet, driving without valid insurance and not having a valid pollution-under-control certificate, alongside challans for other traffic violations.
A scooter with Rs 10 lakh in dues was seized earlier too
This is not the first such case in Gurugram. Traffic police had recently seized a scooter carrying around 96 pending challans, with dues amounting to Rs 10 lakh. In the latest case, the motorcycle has also been seized and parked at a designated location while further action under the Motor Vehicles Act is taken.
Crackdown set to continue
Police said the enforcement drive will continue, with vehicles carrying old pending challans being identified and impounded. Officials said owners of such vehicles could face further legal action along with fines under the Motor Vehicles Act.
