Panchkula Police have scored a major breakthrough in their ongoing crackdown against illegal liquor smuggling across Haryana. Acting on precise intelligence, the Crime Branch-3 team intercepted a container truck near the Suraj Cinema parking lot in Sector 1, seizing illicit liquor valued at approximately Rs 25 lakh. The driver was apprehended at the spot after officers discovered hundreds of liquor cases concealed behind plastic vegetable crates inside the vehicle.
Targeted Police Blockade and High-Speed Interception
The operational success followed specific information gathered by the police network. DCP Crime and Traffic Amarinder Singh confirmed that Crime Branch-3 received secret intelligence indicating that a suspect, identified as Rakesh Kumar from Sonipat district, had loaded a consignment of bootleg liquor in Chandigarh and was attempting to transport it through Panchkula towards Gujarat inside a container truck.
Upon receiving the tip-off, officers established a strategic checkpoint on the road leading toward Suraj Cinema. During the morning hours, when the designated container vehicle approached the checkpoint, the driver spotted the police presence and attempted to evade capture by accelerating into the Suraj Cinema parking area. A police team led by Incharge Ajit Singh immediately gave chase, intercepted the vehicle, and brought driver Rakesh Kumar into custody.
564 Liquor Cases Recovered Behind Plastic Crates
During preliminary questioning at the scene, driver Rakesh Kumar attempted to mislead law enforcement officers by claiming that the container was loaded purely with fresh vegetables. However, a thorough physical inspection of the cargo hold revealed 15 plastic crates of vegetables positioned at the front as a cover, behind which a massive cache of illegal alcohol was hidden. When asked to produce a valid excise permit or transportation license, the driver failed to provide any supporting legal documents.
A detailed inventory conducted by the police team led to the recovery of 564 cases of illegal alcohol, comprising Indian Made Foreign Liquor, country-made liquor, and beer. Panchkula Police officially impounded the container vehicle, the 15 plastic crates, and the entire consignment of 564 liquor cases, assessing the market value of the seized alcohol at around Rs 25 lakh.
FIR Registered Under Section 61(1)(A) to Trace Full Network
Following the seizure, police formally registered a case against Rakesh Kumar at the Sector 7 Police Station in Panchkula under Section 61(1)(A) of the Haryana Excise (Amendment) Act. Initial interrogation of the driver revealed that the illicit consignment had been dispatched from Chandigarh with the final destination intended to be Gujarat.
Panchkula Police Commissioner Pankaj Nain stated that the investigation will extend well beyond the driver's arrest to dismantle the broader smuggling syndicate behind the shipment. Authorities plan to present the accused before a local court to secure police remand. This custody will enable investigators to trace the exact origin of the alcohol in Chandigarh, identify the individuals who ordered the loading, determine the intended recipient in Gujarat, and uncover all accomplices involved in the illegal racket.

Police Commissioner Pankaj Nain reiterated that Panchkula Police are maintaining absolute zero tolerance toward illegal liquor trafficking, narcotics distribution, and related unlawful operations. He issued strict orders to all police personnel stationed at district checkpoints to ensure rigorous inspection of all suspicious vehicles without any laxity.
Furthermore, the police chief appealed to the public to actively assist law enforcement by reporting any information regarding illicit liquor trade or illegal activities. He assured citizens that the identity of anyone providing actionable intelligence to the police would be kept strictly confidential.
