In response, a thalassemia screening and bone marrow donor registration campaign has been launched at the Sharda Care Athletic Camp in Greater Noida. During the event, Dr. Pawan Kumar Singh, Vice Chairman of the Department of Hematology, explained that permanent treatment for several severe blood disorders is possible through bone marrow transplantation. The critical factor for the success of this procedure is finding a perfectly matched bone marrow donor, which is the primary objective behind these awareness and recruitment drives.
The Necessity of Finding a Match
Dr. Singh emphasized that these camps are designed to build a registry of potential donors, ensuring that patients in need can find a compatible donor in a timely manner. The process relies heavily on finding a volunteer whose biological markers are an exact match for the patient. By proactively recruiting healthy individuals, the medical community aims to increase the chances of saving lives for those suffering from chronic blood conditions.
Conditions Treated by Bone Marrow Transplants
According to Dr. Singh, bone marrow transplants are effective not only for thalassemia but also for various genetic blood disorders, blood cancer, and certain non-cancerous conditions such as PNH. Thalassemia remains the most common genetic blood disorder, requiring patients to receive regular blood transfusions starting from approximately six months of age. A successful bone marrow transplant can provide a permanent solution, relieving the patient from the need for lifelong transfusions.
Prevention and Awareness
Dr. Singh underscored that prevention is as important as treatment. If both parents are carriers of the thalassemia trait, prenatal testing can determine if the fetus is affected by the disease. Through timely testing and appropriate medical counseling, the transmission of the disease can be managed. Consequently, he strongly advises young people and newlywed couples to undergo testing to identify their carrier status.
The Role of HLA Testing and Registration
For patients requiring a transplant, the first step is to perform an HLA test on family members, specifically siblings, to find a biological match. When a family member is not a match, the medical team searches through national and international donor registries. These registries rely on healthy volunteers who register voluntarily. When a match is found with a patient, the donor is contacted to proceed with the donation process. Dr. Singh noted that a higher number of registered individuals significantly improves the probability of finding life-saving donors for those waiting for a transplant.

Given that Greater Noida is a major industrial and educational hub with a large population of young professionals and students, the campaign holds special significance. Dr. Singh highlighted three primary goals of the initiative: encouraging youth to determine their carrier status, assisting affected families in identifying potential donors via HLA testing, and registering healthy volunteers who may serve as future donors. Increased participation from the youth in this region is essential for ensuring that future patients receive the opportunity for a new life.
