Monsoon brings refreshing breezes and pleasant showers, but the season also creates an ideal breeding environment for bacteria, viruses, and mosquitoes. During this period, the risk of catching colds, viral fevers, skin ailments, and stomach infections increases significantly. Fortunately, adopting a few simple everyday habits can largely protect against these seasonal illnesses, and the Ministry of Ayush strongly advises maintaining rigorous cleanliness during the rains.
Hand Hygiene As The First Line of Defense
One of the most crucial steps during the rainy season is washing your hands frequently with soap and clean water. Whether you are returning from outside, preparing or eating a meal, or using the restroom, cleaning your hands properly helps minimize the risk of infection. Unwashed hands can easily transfer various harmful bacteria and viruses directly into the body.
Managing Wet Clothes and Footwear
Remaining in wet clothes or damp shoes for extended periods after getting drenched can trigger skin problems such as fungal infections and severe itching. Therefore, change into dry clothes immediately upon reaching home and wash and dry your feet thoroughly. It is especially vital to keep the spaces between your toes completely dry, as lingering moisture encourages fungal growth.
Preventing Water Stagnation Around the Home
Accumulated water around the house or on rooftops during the rainy season drastically increases the likelihood of mosquito breeding. To safeguard against vector-borne diseases like dengue, malaria, and chikungunya, prevent any water from pooling nearby. Additionally, keep dustbins covered and dispose of garbage regularly to curb the proliferation of insects and pests.
Self-Care Remedies for Coughs and Colds
If you experience a mild cough or a scratchy throat due to changing weather, ensure you get adequate rest and keep your body well-hydrated. According to the Ministry of Ayush, drinking warm milk with turmeric, consuming lukewarm ginger-tulsi decoction, gargling with warm salt water, and taking steam can help soothe the throat. However, if a cough persists for a long time, high fever develops, or breathing becomes difficult, consulting a qualified doctor is essential.
Mindful Eating and Water Safety
During the monsoon, strictly avoid consuming uncovered street food or meals left out for too long. Stick to freshly prepared, well-cooked food and consume only clean, safe drinking water. Washing fruits and vegetables thoroughly before use is also mandatory to keep infection risks at bay.
