Nagpur Lab Finds Dangerous Mercury and Lead Levels in Pakistani Made Gori Beauty Cream, Sale Banned

A laboratory test on the Pakistani made Gori Beauty Cream seized in Nagpur has found mercury and lead far above safe limits, prompting authorities to order an immediate ban on its sale and use.

Sale and use of the Pakistani made Gori Beauty Cream have been completely banned after laboratory tests found mercury and lead in the product far above permitted limits. The cream was seized in Nagpur nearly two months ago, and when its samples were sent for testing, they failed outright. Once the report confirmed how unsafe the product was, authorities ordered an immediate halt to its sale and use.

A Fairness Promise Built On Toxic Metals

Gori Beauty Cream had long marketed itself with claims of making skin fairer, drawing in customers on that promise alone. Acting on suspicion around those claims, Nagpur's Food and Drug Administration, or FDA, raided outlets, seized large quantities of the cream and sent it for laboratory analysis. The results showed mercury and lead, both heavy metals, present well beyond the prescribed safety limits. Such metals can enter the body through the skin and damage internal organs, including the kidneys.

No Batch Number, No Expiry Date On The Packaging

The seized cream also turned out to be missing basic information required on any cosmetic product. There was no manufacturer name or address, no batch number, no manufacturing date and no expiry date printed anywhere on the packaging. That absence alone counts as a serious breach of cosmetic regulations. The Food and Drug Administration's report further specified that the cream contained mercury at 11944 ppm and lead at 32 ppm, both figures well past the permitted threshold.

The First Raid Took Place In April

The case traces back to April, when the Food and Drug Administration raided shops in Nagpur's Itwari market. The raid turned up several creams and soaps, including the Gori cream, all of which were seized on the spot. Samples were then sent to a laboratory in Pune for testing, where the cream failed the lab test. That failure is what led the department to move toward banning it.

How The Toxin Travels From Skin To Kidney

Investigators also established that the seized cream is manufactured in Pakistan, with the packaging clearly printed with the words Made in Pakistan. Similar complaints about this cream had already surfaced in April from Maharashtra's Dhulia and Sambhaji Nagar, prompting action there as well. A joint commissioner in the Drug Administration explained that when mercury levels in a cream are too high, the metal is absorbed through the skin, enters the body, and damages the kidneys.

Over Rs 15186 Worth Of Cream Seized In A Month

Between 20 April and 10 May, the Food and Drug Administration carried out a series of raids across multiple locations. During this period, officials seized Pakistani made Gori Beauty Cream along with Face Fresh Gold Plus Cream, Golden Star Beauty Cream and Gori Whitening Body Lotion, together worth around Rs 15186. Reports indicate that the real danger of these creams came to light only after some women developed a serious kidney condition called membranous nephropathy. Officials were direct in their warning: no cream can actually make skin fairer, but if its mercury content is high, it can cause serious damage to the kidneys.

What this means for you

  • Across India: Anyone using unlabelled or imported fairness creams should check packaging for a batch number and expiry date, since similar products may be circulating in other parts of the country too.
  • In Nagpur, Dhulia and Sambhaji Nagar: Residents should immediately stop using Gori Beauty Cream, Face Fresh Gold Plus Cream, Golden Star Beauty Cream and Gori Whitening Body Lotion, as these are the exact products seized and banned.
