Should Women Go To The Gym During Periods? Trainer Shares Expert Tips

Fitness trainer Milan Chaprana from Ghaziabad explains that light workouts can be done during periods if the body feels normal, while emphasizing proper diet and hydration.

As soon as their menstrual cycle begins, many women and girls abruptly stop visiting the gym. A common misconception is that exercising during these days can intensify physical pain and fatigue. However, if the body feels reasonably normal, light to moderate physical exercises can easily be performed even during menstruation. The key is to execute workouts strictly according to the body's actual capacity during this phase. Especially on the first and second days, when cramps, weakness, or lethargy peak, the signals sent by the physical self should never be overlooked or ignored.

Milan Chaprana, a trainer at Trap God Arena gym located in Ghaziabad, noted that there is no absolute need to halt gym routines entirely during periods. If the physical state feels stable, a light to moderate workout lasting around 20 to 30 minutes can be safely carried out. Walking, stretching, and light weight exercises can be incorporated into the routine during this time. Nevertheless, if a person experiences sharp pain, dizziness, or intense weakness, it is far wiser to skip the workout session altogether.

According to the trainer, heavy weightlifting and extremely high-intensity physical activities must be strictly avoided during menstruation. The overall intensity of the routine should be kept much lower compared to normal days. If a woman routinely engages in weight training and feels physically capable, she may choose to exercise using roughly 60 to 70 percent of her usual capacity and maximum weight limits. Upper body workouts targeting the chest, biceps, and triceps can be performed safely. Conversely, if lower body movements cause any physical discomfort or pain, those particular exercises should be postponed for a few days.

Dietary habits demand careful attention alongside exercise during the menstrual cycle. As advised by trainer Milan Chaprana, the daily diet should adequately incorporate proteins, carbohydrates, fiber, and healthy fats. Consuming fresh, home-cooked, and nourishing food remains the best choice, while excessively oily meals and junk foods should be heavily restricted. Maintaining proper hydration is equally crucial during these days. The trainer highlighted the importance of consuming roughly 3 to 4 liters of water daily, though exact fluid requirements may vary depending on an individual's physical condition, weather, and daily routine. Ensuring adequate rest and proper sleep is also vital whenever fatigue sets in.

The trainer also issued a firm warning regarding the consumption of steroids in fitness circles. She stated clearly that steroids should never be used without professional medical guidance, neither during periods nor on ordinary days. Instead, protein intake can be managed naturally as part of a balanced and healthy diet to meet nutritional goals.

Every woman's physical experience and endurance during menstruation can vary significantly. Therefore, workouts should always be tailored to match the body's current capacity and the specific symptoms experienced at that moment. If intense pain, dizziness, unusual weakness, or any other health complication arises, one should immediately stop exercising, take adequate rest, and consult a doctor if necessary.
