In Gonda district, one healer runs no hospital and owns no diagnostic machine, yet patients start lining up outside his home every morning. He is Vaidya Vishnu Dutt Prajapati, who has spent years treating people using nothing but traditional Ayurveda and herbs he prepares himself. What stands out is that his patients don't just come from within Gonda, people travel in daily from neighbouring districts like Balrampur, Shravasti and Bahraich, a sign that his reputation now reaches well beyond the district's borders.
A home turned into a treatment centre
Prajapati has no hospital or modern clinic to his name, he has spent years seeing patients simply by sitting at his own house. His method of diagnosis is entirely different from a modern doctor's, he first holds the patient's wrist to read the pulse and only then decides which herbs the case calls for. He did not learn this skill at any medical college, it was passed down to him through the traditional community of vaidyas, where such knowledge travels from one generation to the next through a guru-shishya style of teaching.
Dozens of remedies prepared right at home
A range of Ayurvedic remedies and herbal powders are made at his home itself. These include wild shatavari, powdered bael seed, powdered bitter gourd, a powder made from neem leaves and bark, ashwagandha, jarakush and tulsi panchang. No two patients get the same dose, the quantity and method are decided according to each person's illness and physical condition, following the old Ayurvedic texts.
From joint pain to cough and cold, who shows up the most
According to Prajapati, the largest number of his patients suffer from joint pain, stomach trouble, skin disease, cold and cough, and general weakness, largely the kind of everyday complaints people prefer to treat with home remedies before turning to costlier options. He says many patients do find relief through Ayurvedic treatment, but he does not treat it as a cure for everything, so the moment an illness looks serious he sends the patient straight to a doctor rather than risk any delay.
Trust that spans four districts
People from Balrampur, Shravasti, Bahraich and the surrounding areas, besides Gonda itself, keep arriving purely on the belief that this old method can bring them relief. Even in an age of big hospitals and modern machines, faith in herbal remedies and pulse diagnosis has not faded, which is why this small home based practice keeps seeing a steady stream of patients every single day.
