On Saturday evening, two separate cloudburst incidents occurred in the Shangus and Pahalgam areas of the Anantnag district in South Kashmir, triggering widespread destruction. The resulting flash floods submerged homes, agricultural fields, orchards, and hotels, causing significant distress to the local population. The inundation of farmland and residential premises is expected to result in heavy financial losses for local farmers. This disaster follows a previous cloudburst in Doda, leading the India Meteorological Department to issue warnings for heavy to very heavy rainfall across various parts of the region.
Details of the Incidents and Damage
The first event occurred in the upper reaches of Chitergul in the Shangus region, where a cloudburst caused the water level in the Aripath Nullah to rise suddenly. The floodwaters, laden with mud and debris, surged into nearby residential areas, paddy fields, and orchards, resulting in the destruction of standing crops and damage to residential structures. Roughly an hour later, a second incident struck the Overa Wildlife Sanctuary area in Pahalgam. This caused a flash flood in the Overa Nullah, which reached several huts and hotels along the bank, causing widespread panic. Despite the severity of the incident, all tourists staying at a hotel near the Nullah were reported safe, and there have been no reports of casualties thus far. Local administration teams are currently surveying the affected areas to assess the extent of the damage.
Administrative Response and Relief Measures
Following the reports, district administration, disaster management, and revenue department teams were immediately deployed to the site. The SDM of Pahalgam is personally overseeing the relief and rescue efforts, while sensitive zones are being monitored closely. As a precautionary measure to prevent potential electrical accidents, all 11 KV feeders connected to the Batkoot Receiving Station have been temporarily powered down. This suspension has affected electricity services in the Avoura, Dahwatu, Laddi, and Batkoot regions. All concerned departments have been placed on high alert, and officials have confirmed that they are prepared to deploy additional relief teams if the situation demands further intervention.

The district administration has issued an urgent appeal to local residents and tourists to exercise extreme caution. People are strictly advised to avoid the banks of rivers, streams, and water channels. Movement in the vicinity of the Aripath and Overa Nullahs is highly discouraged, and the public is urged to adhere strictly to all official advisories issued by the government. Officials have clarified that while there are no reports of fatalities, the situation remains fluid and is under constant surveillance to ensure public safety in the coming hours.
