At the tender age of 24, he displayed extraordinary courage that continues to inspire the nation. While undertaking a training sortie from the Bathinda Air Force Station in Punjab, his fighter aircraft suffered a sudden technical malfunction, prompting him to prioritize the safety of ordinary citizens above his own survival.
A Lifelong Dream of Soaring High in the Skies
Born on February 21, 1984, in Medininagar, Palamu district, Manu Akhouri grew up in a patriotic household. His father, Colonel Sanjay Akhouri, served in the Indian Army from 1976 until his retirement in 2013, while his mother is Neera Akhouri. Manu completed his foundational education at the local Sacred Heart School. After finishing his 12th grade in 2002, he began preparing for the National Defence Academy entrance exams. From his early childhood, he harbored a deep fascination for aviation and combat fighter jets.
Overcoming Hurdles to Join the Indian Air Force
Despite his armed forces background, the journey to the cockpit was challenging. During the NDA selection rounds, he was initially selected for the Army and later for the Navy, but his absolute goal remained the Indian Air Force. Driven by unwavering resolve, he successfully cleared the Air Force selection in 2003. Following a rigorous training regimen, he was commissioned in 2006 and moved to Bidar in Karnataka for advanced training. Recognizing his aptitude, he was selected in 2008 to train on modern Hawk aircraft in England, and upon completing his training, he was posted to the 17 Squadron at the Bathinda Air Force Station in 2009.
Sudden Technical Failure During a Routine Sortie
The fateful incident unfolded on September 10, 2009, when Manu set out on a scheduled training flight. He successfully completed the first circuit of the flight plan and was instructed to execute a second round. During this subsequent phase, his MiG-21 aircraft developed a severe technical snag, causing the machine to lose altitude rapidly. He immediately contacted Air Traffic Control to report the emergency. Directly beneath his flight path lay a densely populated residential zone and a senior secondary school housing approximately 1,500 studying children.
Diverting the Doomed Jet Away From a Catastrophe
Faced with a life-or-death decision, Manu chose duty over self-preservation. He steered the aircraft away from the school premises to avert a massive tragedy. Along the path, he also avoided a fuel station and a busy national highway carrying regular commuters. He continuously manipulated the controls to drag the crippled fighter away from crowded clusters. Ultimately, the jet crashed in an isolated area near Bhalaiana village in the Muktsar region of Punjab, claiming the young pilot's life.
A Father's Journey Interrupted by Tragic News
Colonel Sanjay Akhouri was traveling by train to visit his son in Bathinda when a colleague called to inform him about the MiG-21 crash and that Manu was at the controls. Processing the sudden loss was immensely painful for the family. Manu's legacy lives on in the hearts of people. In Bhalaiana village, the local school is associated with his memory, while in Medininagar, the road stretching from Saddik Chowk to Engineering Road is named Manu Akhouri Marg. Every year on September 10, veterans, social workers, and citizens gather to pay homage to the fallen hero.
