Agricultural experts warn that if farmers overlook the initial signs of this destructive pest for even three to four days, it can multiply rapidly and devastate the entire field.

According to Dr. Pramod Kumar, an agricultural scientist at the Zonal Research Station in Chianki, Palamu, the Fall Armyworm is a highly damaging pest during the early and vegetative stages of maize. The larvae hide inside the upper sections, newly emerging leaves, and whorls of the plant, consuming the foliage from within. Over time, clear signs of damage appear, including ragged holes and chewed stripes on the leaves. In cases of severe infestation, the pest destroys the tender growing point of the plant, halting its vertical growth and ultimately ruining the harvest entirely.
Importance of regular field inspection
Experts emphasize that farmers must avoid the common mistake of stopping field checks once the initial symptoms are spotted. As soon as the maize plants attain knee-height, growers should inspect their fields regularly during the morning or evening hours. Special attention must be given to the central whorls and the newest leaves unfolding from the center. The moment any pest activity becomes visible, farmers should apply appropriate chemical treatments immediately. This particular vulnerability peaks right around the time the crop reaches the knee-height stage.
Precautions for proper pesticide application
To control the Fall Armyworm effectively, scientists recommend utilizing chlorantraniliprole-based insecticides such as Coragen. Growers should strictly follow the recommended dosage printed on the product label. Under typical conditions, mixing roughly 0.6 to 1 milliliter of the chemical per liter of water is suggested. The spraying technique must ensure that the solution reaches deep inside the leaf whorls and the crown of the plant where the pests reside.

Taking prompt and accurate measures yields visible pest control results within just one to two days of application. Therefore, protecting maize crops from armyworm attacks relies on proactive methods.
