The controversy began following an alleged abusive telephonic conversation and threats directed at the Barwadda police station in-charge in Dhanbad. In response, the Police Association has issued a strict five-day ultimatum demanding the immediate arrest of Jayram Mahato. The roots of the controversy trace back to an alleged phone call between Jayram Mahato and Barwadda police station in-charge Ravi Kumar. After an audio clip went viral on social media, allegations surfaced that offensive language and threats were used during the exchange. Prompted by the viral audio, the Police Association initiated demands for strict penal action, and a formal First Information Report was subsequently registered by the police. However, the authenticity of the viral audio has not been independently verified, and Jayram Mahato has openly questioned the validity of the accusations.
On the other side, the Jharkhand Police Association issued a five-day deadline for the arrest of Jayram Mahato and other named accused individuals, warning of statewide agitations if no action is taken. Reports of units from the Police Association in districts like Ranchi and Lohardaga extending their support to this demand have also emerged. Prior to this, police organizations had formally demanded an apology from the MLA. Consequently, the matter has transcended a simple disagreement between a lawmaker and a local station officer, turning into a direct confrontation between an organized police apparatus and an elected legislator.

Bharatiya Janata Party state spokesperson Pratul Shahdeo criticized the Police Association's five-day deadline for arresting an elected MLA, stating it is unjustified and that actions must strictly follow legal procedures. He questioned that if this is how law enforcement treats an elected representative, how ordinary citizens and particularly indigenous and tribal communities are treated.
Conversely, former Congress state president Rajesh Thakur appealed for restraint from both sides, noting that the state's policing conditions during previous regimes are well known, while acknowledging that both sides frequently resort to excessive rhetoric. He emphasized that both police officials and public representatives must maintain composure to prevent the environment from deteriorating, and recalled having previously advised the legislator to maintain dignity suited to his office.
Meanwhile, Jharkhand Mukti Morcha central spokesperson Manoj Pandey stated that if the administration is failing to perform its duties properly, grievances should be raised through appropriate legal forums. The JMM spokesperson advised Jayram Mahato to refrain from acting in the heat of the moment, noting that he has a long political career ahead and should avoid such controversies.
