Located near the Tilaiya police station, this remarkable establishment has been designing and stitching garments for five consecutive generations. Over more than a century, while the shop's name, technology, and tailoring styles have evolved dramatically, the core foundation of customer loyalty has remained absolutely unshaken. This journey of precision craftsmanship, which began in the year 1919, has seamlessly integrated into the modern digital age. Today, the shop operates with a highly skilled team of 18 artisans who specialize in cutting, stitching, and providing customized fittings for a wide variety of garments.
From Hand-Stitching to Modern Machines: A Century of Evolution
Parwej Alam, the current owner and manager of this ancestral business, shared the inspiring history of his family's craft. The tailoring legacy was established in 1919 by his great-grandfather, Tafazzul Khalifa, under the name Tafazzul Tailor. During that era, mechanical sewing machines were a rare luxury in the region, forcing Tafazzul to hand-stitch every single garment with immense patience and care using only a needle and thread. The business was later handed down to Parwej's grandfather, Wahid Khalifa, who took over the reigns and expanded the local reach of the enterprise. The legacy then passed to the third generation, Abdul Rashid, who was Parwej's father. Abdul Rashid rebranded the business as Chola Tailor. It was during his father's era that mechanical sewing machines were first introduced to the shop, vastly increasing production speed and efficiency. In 2006, Parwej Alam officially assumed control of the family business, modernizing the brand further by renaming it Perfect Tailor.
The Evolution of Tailoring Charges and Digital Preferences
Reflecting on the economic changes over the decades, Parwej Alam notes a massive contrast between the prices of the past and those of today. In 2006, when he took over the management, the shop charged a modest 60 rupees for stitching a shirt and 110 rupees for a pair of trousers. A classic safari suit could be stitched for 275 rupees, while crafting a high-end customized coat and pant set cost around 1500 rupees. Over the years, in response to inflation and the rising cost of living, these rates have adjusted. Today, the stitching fee for a standard shirt and trouser set stands at approximately 1000 rupees, while a premium suit-pant set costs around 4500 rupees. The way customers interact with tailors has also undergone a digital transformation. Many modern clients arrive at the shop with their smartphones, showing trending designs they have found on online fashion portals or social media platforms. The skilled artisans at the shop easily replicate these digital designs, ensuring that the final garment matches the exact modern aesthetics requested by the client.
The Triumph of Custom Fit Over Global Brands
Despite the widespread availability of high-end readymade clothing brands, the demand for custom tailoring at Perfect Tailor has never waned. Parwej Alam explains that because every human body has unique physical proportions, off-the-rack branded clothing rarely offers a flawless silhouette. Consequently, many customers buy expensive branded garments from malls and bring them to his shop solely for alteration and precision fitting. This unmatched reliability has made the establishment famous far beyond Koderma. People from neighboring regions such as Hazaribagh, Giridih, and Barkatha regularly travel to the shop to get their outfits designed. Parwej shared an extraordinary example of a former resident of Koderma who has lived in Bengaluru for several years but still refuses to trust any other tailor. This loyal customer couriers his unstitched fabrics from Bengaluru to Koderma, where they are tailored to his exact measurements, and then couriered back to his doorstep in Bengaluru.
A Commitment to Quality: The Pre-Stitching Wash Ritual
To ensure perfect dimensions and durability, Perfect Tailor enforces a strict, traditional quality control ritual. Parwej Alam revealed that when a customer brings in a new piece of fabric, it is never cut immediately. Instead, the fabric is first thoroughly washed in water. This essential step is taken to trigger any potential shrinkage before the scissors touch the material. Once the washed fabric is completely dried and ironed, the tailors proceed with marking, cutting, and stitching. This meticulous process ensures that the garment retains its shape and perfect fit even after multiple washes at home. Although five generations of this family business have witnessed massive technological and stylistic transformations, delivering premium quality and honoring customer trust remains the ultimate priority for this family-owned enterprise.
