The elephant family residing within the Dalma Wildlife Sanctuary near Jamshedpur, Jharkhand, has welcomed a spirited new member. A young calf named Shekhar, who previously faced dire survival odds after getting separated from his wild herd, has officially begun a new chapter of life under protective human care. His lively behavior and youthful antics have quickly captivated forest staff and visitors alike across the reserve.
The Rescue Path From Gumla Forest Division
The young elephant, estimated to be around 7 months old, was transported to Dalma on Monday from the Gumla forest division. His journey into captivity began when he wandered away from his natural herd. Forest department teams initially launched efforts to reunite the vulnerable infant with his biological group, yet the calf soon became isolated once again. Given the persistent risks to his survival in the open wild without maternal protection, authorities decided that shifting him to Dalma was essential to ensure his physical safety and provide proper nutrition.
Dalma DFO Saba Alam Ansari stated that Shekhar was transferred to the sanctuary only after all mandated legal and procedural clearances were completed. Upon arrival at the sanctuary grounds, the spirited calf immediately displayed his energetic nature. His excitement and agility in the unfamiliar environment kept the forest staff on high alert as they worked diligently to manage and settle him.
Joining Rajani and Badal to Complete a Trio
Prior to Shekhar's arrival, Dalma Wildlife Sanctuary served as home to two resident elephants, a female named Rajani and a male named Badal. With the inclusion of the young calf, the resident elephant group now stands at three members. Shortly after he arrived at his enclosure, the mahout responsible for tending to Rajani personally hand-fed the young calf.
The forest administration will continue closely monitoring Shekhar's dietary needs, physical development, and daily welfare under direct supervision. His presence will also offer wildlife enthusiasts and tourists visiting Dalma a chance to observe the calf alongside Rajani and Badal. After losing his herd in the wild, Shekhar now has a secure habitat and a permanent support network to thrive.
