A massive rush has been witnessed at the traffic police headquarters in Jharkhand's capital city of Ranchi, where long lines of vehicle owners are queuing up to clear overdue traffic fines. A significant number of motorists waiting at the payment counters carry violation notices that were issued years ago but remained completely unpaid. Amit Kumar, who arrived at the facility to settle his dues, pointed out that following road safety regulations is an essential duty. He explained that whenever an infraction occurs and a penalty is issued, settling it promptly is the proper approach, adding that clearing historical fines without further delay remains the smartest decision.
Judicial Remarks Spark Apprehension Among Vehicle Owners
The issue of uncollected traffic fines has gained widespread national attention following sharp oral observations recently delivered by the Supreme Court. The abrupt surge in visitors at the Ranchi traffic office is being widely linked to these strict judicial remarks. While it cannot be confirmed definitively whether the entire rush stems solely from the apex court's observations, the statements have unmistakably generated serious anxiety among motorists. Rather than waiting for enforcement squads to take punitive action, people are taking early steps to settle their lingering accounts.
Unsettled Violations Cross 130 Crore Rupees in Ranchi
Official records maintained by the Ranchi traffic police highlight an enormous backlog across the urban center, revealing that unpaid traffic penalties have surpassed 130 crore rupees. This staggering figure underlines the vast scale on which vehicle owners have neglected their financial liabilities after being cited for traffic infractions. Faced with this enormous mountain of pending dues, authorities are now actively urging drivers across the capital to come forward and clear their accounts at the earliest possible opportunity.
Traffic SP Rakesh Singh Cautions Motorists Over Impoundment
Addressing the escalating situation, Ranchi Traffic SP Rakesh Singh urged motorists to clear their pending violation notices voluntarily. He noted that considering the assertive stance adopted by the Supreme Court, strict enforcement measures could soon be rolled out against non-compliant vehicles. The senior police official cautioned drivers that they should clear their outstanding penalties immediately before the department is compelled to initiate strict measures such as impounding vehicles.
Electricity Bill Linkage Proposed Amid Nationwide Backlog
During hearings on the issue, several oral suggestions and directives were voiced by the Supreme Court to ensure effective debt recovery. These included potential mechanisms to tether unpaid traffic penalties directly to household electricity bills, thereby preventing violators from evading collection. Oral remarks were also made regarding the outright seizure of vehicles carrying long-standing unpaid citations. The scale of the challenge extends far beyond Ranchi, with unpaid traffic fines across India collectively amounting to thousands of crores of rupees.
