In Kota's Landmark City neighbourhood, where mornings usually begin with turning pages of textbooks and nights pass under the heavy pressure of competitive exam preparation, one girls' hostel has completely changed the way hostel life works here. The hostel is called Madhuram Hostel, and its operators claim it is currently the only hostel in Kota that gives its students such a high level of comfort and care, along with a strong study environment, that they don't feel the absence of home at all. Kota is widely known across the country as its coaching hub, and hostels here have traditionally followed strict, rule-bound routines, but this hostel appears to break away from that old pattern.
From high-speed internet to a rooftop cafe, a long list of comforts
Walking in through the hostel's main gate, the atmosphere immediately feels different from a typical hostel. The walls are lined with attractive, motivational posters that are meant to directly shape the mindset of the students living there. The hostel offers high-speed internet for studying and an open gym for students who want to stay fit, but its biggest draw is the rooftop cafe, built specifically to satisfy the sudden hunger pangs that strike students studying late into the night. No warden, the owner Kavita Rathi checks in herself
Kavita Rathi, who owns the hostel, says her goal was never just to give students a room to stay in. She explains, "Our main aim is not just to give students a room to live in. We motivate every girl who comes to this hostel mentally, so that the moment she steps inside, she remembers her top priority is that she has come here to fulfil her own dream and her parents' dream."
Kavita Rathi is herself a working woman, and the hostel belongs to her husband. A warden has formally been appointed to handle the hostel's day-to-day care, but Kavita personally feels that girls who have come from so far away cannot simply be left in the hands of staff alone. That is why she makes it a point to visit the hostel every day, sit with the girls, ask how they are doing, and take feedback on their studies. She says, "There is no shortage of hostels in Kota, but we thought of doing something different. These girls are far away from their homes, and we didn't want them to feel lonely here, so I personally spend time with them so that they can truly feel like they are at home."
The rooftop cafe is the perfect cure for late-night cravings
Most hostels in Kota have a fixed time for breakfast, lunch and dinner, and if a student gets even slightly late because of studying, she often has to sleep on an empty stomach. The story at Madhuram Hostel is completely different. Prachi, a student living and studying at this hostel, shared her personal experience, saying, "When we stay up late at night studying, feeling hungry is only natural. But we don't need to wander outside the hostel at night looking for food. There is a wonderful rooftop cafe right on the terrace of our hostel. Whatever we order there, even at midnight, comes to us fresh and hot immediately. My friends and I love eating hot Maggi at night, and drinking fresh juice or a shake. There's no pressure of timing when it comes to food here. This freedom makes us feel like we are not living in a hostel, but in our own home."
