While it may sound unusual and perhaps prompt some sympathy, this is exactly how the holidays are unfolding for a number of children in China. Hardship summer camps designed to give youngsters a taste of difficult living are rapidly growing in popularity across the country. Parents are willingly sending their children to rural areas so they can experience farming and manual labor, helping them understand the true value of hard work and appreciate the comforts provided by their families.
According to reports, these camps are primarily being organized in regions like Sichuan, Guizhou, and Yunnan in China. Here, children are immersed in a rustic rural lifestyle. Their mobile phones and electronic devices are confiscated upon arrival. Furthermore, the daily amenities and supplies allocated to each child depend directly on their performance and the work they put in. Several videos that have gone viral on social media show children weeping and pleading to be sent back home. Some youngsters even declare that they are ready to study diligently at home as long as they are spared from agricultural chores.
What Tasks Are Assigned at These Camps?
During the camp program, participants are required to perform grueling tasks such as digging and selling potatoes, stripping tree bark, and feeding livestock like pigs. Surprisingly, the children receive no payment for completing these demanding jobs. Instead, parents must shell out thousands of currency units out of their own pockets. Spending just 10 days at one of these camps costs around 4,000 yuan, which amounts to more than 58,000 rupees. Meanwhile, staying for an entire month can incur fees exceeding 10,000 yuan. The rules enforced at these locations are notably strict. If a child fails to finish an assigned chore, they may be punished by being restricted to a diet consisting solely of potatoes.
Why Are Parents Sending Their Children?
Organizers behind these camps state that the primary objective is to teach kids how difficult it is to earn money and navigate daily life. Many children growing up in modern cities enjoy comfortable lifestyles and remain completely detached from the realities of physical labor. As part of the camp activities, some children are even made to write letters addressed to their parents. Many mothers and fathers grow emotional upon seeing these letters and videos, subsequently recommending the camps to others. However, not every parent reports the exact same outcome. One father shared that his daughter complained continuously throughout her stay, though she eventually grew to somewhat enjoy working in the soil. On the other hand, a mother from Shanghai noted that despite a 10-day stint, her seven-year-old daughter's habits did not completely change, but she remained glad that the child stepped out of her pampered routine to gain a novel experience.
A Growing Debate Surrounding the Trend
These intense camps have inevitably sparked a wider debate in society. One perspective argues that children ought to experience a degree of hardship so they can truly value the privileges they enjoy. Conversely, critics have raised serious concerns regarding the practice. They warn that subjecting youngsters to excessive physical and psychological pressure can cast a negative shadow on their overall growth and development.
