With the festive season of Diwali fast approaching, households across the country dive into comprehensive deep-cleaning routines. While cupboards, windows, and kitchen wall tiles routinely receive prompt attention, the exhaust fan installed in kitchens and bathrooms is frequently overlooked. Over months of routine cooking, a dense and sticky combination of cooking grease, oil vapours, and airborne dust settles across the blades and vent grills. Preparing your home for the festivities does not require harsh measures, as a few straightforward household methods and a systematic approach can restore your exhaust fans to pristine condition.
Prioritising Electrical Safety and Dry Dusting
Sushma Tiwari, a resident of Vasundhara in Delhi, points out that safeguarding yourself against electrical hazards is the primary step before starting any cleaning. Always turn off the fan switch and disconnect the main power supply to ensure absolute safety. Once the unit is powered down, take a dry microfibre cloth or a soft-bristled brush to gently wipe away the loose, dry layer of dust accumulated on the surface. Removing this initial dry debris prevents greasy mud from forming once wet solutions are introduced, streamlining the entire subsequent washing process.
Tackling Oil Residue with Warm Water and Dishwash Liquid
Exhaust fans fitted in kitchens bear the brunt of heavy oil and grease vapours. To break down this oily layer, prepare a mixture by adding a small amount of dishwashing liquid into warm water. Dip a cleaning cloth into this warm soapy solution and wring it out thoroughly so it remains damp without dripping excess water. Use this cloth to carefully wipe down the fan blades and the external housing. The warm soapy moisture helps soften and lift everyday oily films without scratching the surface.
Removing Stubborn Deposits with Baking Soda Paste
When grease has accumulated over months or years, it turns hardened and sticky, resisting basic soap wiping. In such cases, a thick paste crafted from baking soda and a few drops of water provides an effective non-abrasive remedy. If your unit features detachable blades or an unclip-able front grill, remove them and coat the greasy areas evenly with this paste. Allow the paste to rest on the surface for a few minutes so it can penetrate the grime, then wipe it clean using a damp sponge or soft cloth.
Reaching Corners and Mesh Grills with an Old Toothbrush
Dust and oily sludge frequently settle into the tight crevices, outer edges, and fine mesh segments of the exhaust vent where broad wiping cloths cannot reach. An old toothbrush or any miniature soft brush works exceptionally well for detailing these restricted spots. The small bristles readily penetrate narrow gaps and louvres, dislodging compacted grime and ensuring that ventilation openings remain fully unobstructed.
Final Drying Process and Vital Operating Precautions
Once the grime is removed, thoroughly drying every single component of the fan and its casing with a fresh dry cloth is an indispensable step. No residual moisture should be left behind on any surface. If the outer cover or components were detached for washing, make sure they are completely moisture-free before fastening them back in place.
Throughout the cleaning operation, strictly avoid splashing water or spraying liquid cleaning solutions onto the fan motor or electrical wiring connections. Always verify that all parts are bone dry before restoring the power supply or switching the appliance back on. Furthermore, if excessive dirt has penetrated deep inside the motor casing or if disassembling the unit appears difficult, it is advisable to seek the assistance of a trained electrician rather than risking damage.
