Winter has officially arrived, making this season ideal for growing fresh vegetables at home. If you have a small sunny spot on your balcony, rooftop, or near a window, you can easily set up a compact kitchen garden to harvest leafy greens like spinach, fenugreek, and coriander.
The best part about growing these greens is that you do not need separate pots for each of them. All three leafy vegetables can be successfully cultivated together inside a single rectangular grow bag. The period from October to February is considered the most favorable time for planting them because these crops thrive in cooler temperatures and yield a robust harvest. If you are trying home gardening for the first time, you can easily grow fresh leaves by following a few simple steps. Let us explore the proper method for cultivating spinach, fenugreek, and coriander.
Choosing the Right Grow Bag and Location
To begin the gardening process, select a rectangular grow bag that is 8 to 12 inches deep and at least 2 feet long. Ensure that it features drainage holes at the bottom to let excess water escape. Place the bag in a spot that receives 4 to 6 hours of direct sunlight every day. During warmer phases, a spot with morning sun and light afternoon shade works best for plant health.
Preparing the Ideal Soil Mixture
For the healthy growth of spinach, fenugreek, and coriander, a light and nutrient-rich soil composition is essential. Combine garden soil, cocopeat, and well-rotted organic manure or vermicompost in equal proportions. Leave about an inch of space empty at the top when filling the grow bag with soil. Lightly water the soil to keep it moist before placing any seeds inside.
Sowing Seeds in Separate Rows
Create three distinct rows across the surface of the soil inside the grow bag. In the first row, plant spinach seeds about half an inch deep and two inches apart from each other. In the second row, scatter fenugreek seeds and cover them with a thin layer of soil. In the third row, sow coriander seeds, which can be gently crushed into halves before planting to speed up germination. Finish the process by spraying a light mist of water.
Routine Plant Care and Watering Practices
Maintain consistent moisture in the soil without overwatering the plants. Watering gently during the morning hours yields the best results. Seeds typically begin to germinate within a week. If the seedlings sprout too close together, thin them out by removing a few excess plants. After two to three weeks, apply a small amount of vermicompost or diluted liquid organic fertilizer. If pests appear, use an appropriately prepared neem oil spray.
Harvest Timeline and Growth Duration
Fenugreek leaves are usually ready for harvest in about 3 weeks, whereas spinach and coriander take roughly 4 to 5 weeks to mature fully. Snip off only the outer leaves of the plants with scissors while leaving the center intact so new growth continues to emerge. Harvesting fenugreek slightly above the soil level also allows the plants to regenerate. Regular harvesting ensures a continuous supply of fresh leaves. When the plants begin to turn yellow or start flowering, it is time to sow a fresh batch of seeds.
