Tough terrains often defeat heavy vehicles, but steadfast determination can turn the humblest transport into a record-making ride. Sumit Kumar, a resident of Muzaffarnagar in Uttar Pradesh, harboured an ambition to visit the high-altitude landscapes of Spiti Valley. When he suggested the travel plan to his circle of friends, they dismissed the idea and made fun of him by asking where his car was. The taunt struck a chord, yet instead of letting disappointment hold him back, he turned the lighthearted mockery into a personal test. He decided that if a personal car was unavailable, he would complete the expedition in his everyday three-wheeler.
The Treacherous Roads of Spiti Valley
Spiti is widely recognised for its perilous tracks, steep cliffside stretches, sparse population, and raw mountainous trails. The geography is notorious for breaking down even large four-wheel drives. Making matters more difficult, mechanics in the region are exceedingly scarce, with only one or two specialists operating across the expansive terrain. Even if a driver manages to track one down, securing their time during an emergency can be a major hurdle. Despite knowing the mechanical risks and the unforgiving climate of the valley, Sumit refused to abandon his travel ambitions.
Turning a Livelihood Vehicle into an Adventure Ride
Sumit is neither a wealthy entrepreneur nor an owner of luxury automobiles. He belongs to a modest background and relies on driving an electric rickshaw to generate daily income for his household. The very machine that sustains his family became his vehicle of choice for the mountainous expedition. Rather than waiting indefinitely to afford an SUV or borrowing someone else's transport, he trusted his reliable work vehicle and embarked on the 650-kilometre path alone behind the handle.
A Three-Day Drive that Proved Determination Matters
The journey from Muzaffarnagar to Spiti Valley spanned approximately 650 kilometres and took around three days of consistent driving. Overcoming range limits and physical fatigue, Sumit successfully steered his e-rickshaw into the heart of Spiti Valley, fulfilling his longstanding dream. His accomplishment serves as a reminder that financial constraints or limited amenities do not have to cancel human ambitions. What is conventionally seen as a low-speed city vehicle ended up navigating some of the toughest routes in the country, proving that real journeys are powered by courage rather than machine prestige.
