In the disturbing double murder case reported from Sudama Nagar within the Ashbagh police station limits of Bhopal, investigators have shifted their focus toward a potential financial motive. The tragedy came to light on June 24, when neighbors noticed a foul odor emanating from the residence of Hemant Barik and his wife Shakuntala Barik. Upon investigation, they discovered the bodies of the elderly couple and alerted the authorities. The recovery of empty shell casings at the crime scene immediately signaled a calculated homicide, yet despite extensive efforts, the police have not yet managed to apprehend the perpetrators.
Details from the Post-mortem
Subsequent forensic analysis provided a grim picture of the assault. The post-mortem report confirmed that both victims were shot to death. Hemant and Shakuntala sustained gunshot wounds to the head, and in a further disturbing discovery, a bullet was found lodged in Shakuntala’s lower back. Hemant was a retired railway employee, and Shakuntala had served as a nurse before her retirement. The property they occupied is valued at approximately 2 crore rupees, adding a layer of concern regarding potential motives related to their assets.
CCTV Evidence and AI Tracking
During the course of the investigation, authorities conducted extensive interviews with family members and tenants. A significant breakthrough occurred when police reviewed CCTV footage, identifying two suspicious individuals wearing raincoats fleeing the scene. In response, DCP Rashmi Agarwal established a 12-member SIT to expedite the case. The police have officially released images and video footage of these suspects to aid in public identification. Furthermore, law enforcement is utilizing AI-based facial recognition technology to track and identify the attackers more accurately.
The Mystery of the Withdrawn Cash
The investigation is now heavily focused on a recent financial transaction that may link to the motive behind the murders. It has been reported that Shakuntala withdrew a significant sum of 2 lakh rupees from her bank account shortly before the incident. Detectives are now working to determine who received these funds or where the money was spent. To solve this, officers are meticulously reviewing footage from bank premises and ATMs to see if they can identify anyone accompanying Shakuntala during her final visits to the bank. The possibility that the money itself was the catalyst for this fatal crime remains a primary theory for investigators.
