A 28-year-old woman died during treatment at Mission Hospital in Chhatarpur, Madhya Pradesh, triggering a late-night uproar at the hospital by her family members. Her relatives allege that her in-laws forced her to consume poison, while her husband works as a sub-inspector with the Uttar Pradesh Police. The case has stirred outrage in the area, and police have launched a detailed investigation.
Married Two Years Ago, Family Alleges Dowry Harassment
The deceased has been identified as Sangeeta Devi Rajput, 28. She married Anoj Kumar Rajput, a resident of Tikariya village in Uttar Pradesh's Mahoba district, on July 7, 2024. Anoj is a sub-inspector with the UP Police and is currently posted at Jaitpur police station in Etawah district. Sangeeta's parental family lives in Fatehpur, Jahanabad. Her relatives claim that within two years of the marriage, she was repeatedly harassed over dowry and other issues at her in-laws' home. According to the family, the harassment escalated over time and eventually turned physical.
Beaten on September 5, Consumed Poison Two Days Later
Family members say Sangeeta was beaten at her in-laws' house on September 5, and injury marks were visible on her body. As soon as they learned of this, her father Yogendra and brother Himanshu went to her in-laws' home and returned after resolving the dispute. But the peace did not last long, as another argument broke out just two days later, on September 7. Following this fresh dispute, Sangeeta consumed pesticide that was kept at home. Notably, she herself called her parental family to inform them what had happened. She was first taken to a hospital in Naugaon, but when her condition worsened, she was shifted to Mission Hospital in Chhatarpur, where she died during treatment on September 8.
Late-Night Chaos at Hospital, Brother's Tearful Allegation
As soon as news of her death reached them, members of her parental family rushed to Mission Hospital and created an uproar, demanding a postmortem and a fair investigation. Sangeeta's brothers also alerted the control room and Dial 112. The family alleges that her husband, Anoj Kumar, called some acquaintances to the hospital late at night, further heightening tensions there. Breaking down in tears, Sangeeta's brother said the family had spent 50 lakh rupees on her wedding, yet her in-laws tortured her and took her life. His anguish was evident as he questioned how, despite spending such a large amount, his sister still could not get justice.
Postmortem Underway, Police Investigation Continues
Sangeeta's body has now been brought to the district hospital, where a postmortem is underway. Police say the exact cause of death will become clear only after the postmortem report arrives and the investigation is complete. At present, it is not clear whether her death was a case of suicide by poisoning or whether there is another reason behind it. Kotwali police station has registered a case over the woman's death and begun recording statements from both sides.
A Similar Case Reported From Gwalior
Meanwhile, another case of violence between a husband and wife has surfaced from Gwalior, where a husband attacked his wife with a knife after suspecting her of chatting with someone on Instagram. The couple reportedly had a love marriage just four months earlier.
