Police in the Lasudia area of Indore, Madhya Pradesh, have arrested a 28-year-old man who impersonated a high-ranking Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer and District Collector. The suspect, identified as Himanshu Panchal, was operating out of a rented residence in Omaxe City-1. To project official authority and deceive neighbours and visitors, he had prominently installed a fraudulent nameplate outside his residence reading “IAS RAJ SONI – District Collector”.
Interrogation, Discovery of Real Identity, and Seizure of Evidence
During initial questioning by the Lasudia police, Panchal failed to produce any official credentials or valid documentation proving his appointment as an IAS officer. Under sustained interrogation, he eventually confessed to his true identity as Himanshu Panchal. A subsequent search of his rented premises yielded several incriminating items, including the fake District Collector nameplate, customized photo frames, and various other misleading materials designed to simulate official executive standing.
Matrimonial Fraud Involving 21 Women
Further investigation revealed a calculated network of digital impersonation. Panchal had created false user profiles on multiple online matrimonial platforms, representing himself as an active senior IAS officer. Police records indicate that he established contact with at least 21 women through these fraudulent accounts. Investigating officers are actively reaching out to the affected women to ascertain whether financial extortion, breach of trust, or other criminal offences took place during these interactions.
The Sheraton Hotel Dispute That Unraveled the Hoax
The fraud came to light following an incident involving the management of the Sheraton Hotel in Indore. Panchal submitted a formal letter on fabricated official stationery praising the hotel's menu, services, and administrative standards under his assumed collector persona. However, subsequent disagreements and irregularities concerning payment for hotel services raised serious doubts among hotel staff. The management reported the suspicious behavior to the police, initiating the investigation that led to his apprehension.
Prior Offenses in Gujarat and Legal Action Under BNS
Law enforcement authorities suspect Panchal of utilizing the same deceptive tactics at various other hospitality venues across the region. A background check revealed that a prior police case had been registered against him at the Adalaj police station in Gujarat in May 2026. The Lasudia police have charged him under Section 204 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and are currently scrutinizing his past criminal activities, hotel stays, and matrimonial contacts to determine the full scope of his operations.
