Narmadapuram district in Madhya Pradesh saw the launch of a new safety drive on Friday, aimed at cutting deaths caused by lightning strikes and preparing villages across the district to handle the danger. The initiative, called Project Damini, has been rolled out jointly by the district administration, UNICEF Madhya Pradesh and the Disaster Management Institute, known as DMI.
What Project Damini actually covers
The full name of the initiative is Project Damini, Narmadapuram District Lightning Safety Community Awareness Program. Its goal is to carry awareness to the last person in the district before the monsoon arrives, encourage life saving behaviour, and strengthen how prepared communities are for the threat. Officials from the district administration, frontline workers and school students attended the launch event, where a pledge was renewed to keep people safe from lightning, described as a deadly weather related disaster.
A child friendly mascot named Electra
During the launch, the district administration also unveiled a child friendly mascot named Electra, designed specifically to teach children and communities simple, life saving steps to protect themselves from lightning. William Hanlon, head of the UNICEF Madhya Pradesh regional office, congratulated the district administration at the event, saying that most deaths caused by lightning can actually be prevented. He said that timely warnings, community awareness and coordinated local leadership can together ensure that every warning reaches the last person and every family knows the steps needed to stay safe.
Collector Somesh Mishra on the preparation strategy
Narmadapuram District Collector Somesh Mishra said preparation needs to begin well before a disaster actually strikes. He said Project Damini is being used to strengthen coordination between different government departments, train volunteers called Lightning Mitras, and make sure timely warnings and life saving information reach every single village in the district.
Experts weigh in on the app and training push
Anil Gulati, a communication specialist with UNICEF Madhya Pradesh, stressed the wider use of the Damini Lightning Alert App along with community awareness, saying technology can only save lives when people actually know about it and take the right action once a warning comes through. Abhishek Mishra, a technical expert at DMI Bhopal, said the project will push promotion of the Damini app, training of Lightning Mitras, school based awareness activities, and preparedness efforts at the village level.
Campaign to reach farmers and rural communities
Under Project Damini, an awareness campaign will run among farmers, school children, frontline workers and rural communities through both traditional and digital channels, with the aim of keeping lightning related deaths to a minimum during the monsoon season.
