A Landmark Moment for Ratlam's Agricultural Heritage
Ratlam district has every reason to celebrate. Two of its most distinctive agricultural products, Balam Kakdi and Ratlami Garadu, have officially been awarded Geographical Indication (GI) tags. As part of this recognition, Ratlami Garadu will henceforth be known as Malvi Garadu. This achievement comes on the back of sustained work by the Horticulture Department and stands as a major milestone in the district's agricultural history. The district had earlier secured a GI tag for its celebrated Riyawan garlic, and with these two new additions, Ratlam's agricultural identity is earning a stronger foothold on the world stage.
Scale of Cultivation and What Farmers Stand to Gain
Both crops are cultivated across significant stretches of farmland in Ratlam. Current figures show that Balam Kakdi occupies around 100 hectares in the district, while Garadu cultivation spreads across approximately 120 hectares. The GI recognition will bring direct benefits to the large number of farmers connected to these crops. Their produce will now be better positioned to command premium prices and stronger visibility in both domestic and international markets.
Sailana's Kesariya Balam Kakdi: One of a Kind in Colour and Flavour
The Balam Kakdi grown in the Sailana area of Ratlam has built a reputation across India. What makes this cucumber stand out is not just its juicy, refreshing taste but also its striking visual appeal. It comes in shades of yellow, green, and saffron, a combination so distinctive that it has earned the popular name Kesariya Balam Kakdi. These qualities, taken together, set it clearly apart from ordinary cucumber varieties found elsewhere.
Malvi Garadu: Crispy Outside, Soft Inside and Full of Nutritional Value
Malvi Garadu holds a cherished place in the culinary identity of the Malwa region. When fried, it delivers a texture that has become its signature: a satisfyingly crispy exterior that gives way to a perfectly soft interior. Yet its appeal goes well beyond taste, as this root vegetable is widely regarded as highly nutritious.
- It is a rich source of vitamins, minerals, and fibre.
- Certain compounds found in it are believed to support and enhance brain function.
- Its antioxidant properties help strengthen the body's immune system.
- It is also considered helpful in keeping blood sugar levels in check for those managing diabetes.
The GI Tag Brings Authenticity Assurance and a Firmer Place on the World Map
Receiving a GI tag is far more than a bureaucratic formality. It provides an official guarantee of a product's purity and its unique regional character. Whether a buyer is purchasing in India or abroad, the tag assures them that what they are receiving is the genuine article from Ratlam. This recognition is set to place Ratlam more prominently on the agricultural map of both India and the wider world.
