The festive atmosphere of the Hazareshwar Mela in Sheopur, Madhya Pradesh, descended into chaos when a minor verbal argument between fair workers and visitors rapidly escalated into a full-blown brawl. The clash involved sticks, clubs and stone-throwing, leaving several people injured, including the fair's in-charge Sub-Inspector. Video of the confrontation has spread widely on social media, with many viewers drawing comparisons to a dramatic mass brawl depicted in the final episode of Season 3 of the popular web series Panchayat.
How the Violence Erupted Near the Swings
Eyewitnesses say what started as a petty argument got out of hand within moments. In the video that has emerged, a large crowd is seen gathered near the swings at the fairground, with people from both sides attacking each other. Some were swinging sticks while others used clubs. The situation deteriorated further when stone-throwing began, throwing the entire area into pandemonium.
Sub-Inspector Among Those Caught in the Melee
The fair's in-charge Sub-Inspector was also struck during the violence and sustained injuries. As the situation spiralled beyond control, the Kotwali police had to be summoned. Their arrival eventually helped restore calm at the venue. All those injured were immediately rushed to hospital, where they are currently receiving treatment.
FIR Filed Against Fair Staff, Footage Used to Identify Remaining Accused
Police have registered a case against the fair workers based on the complaint received and have launched a formal investigation. Authorities are also combing through video footage to identify accused persons who have not yet been apprehended. Police have stated that strict action will follow once the investigation is complete. A police post has been established at the Hazareshwar Mela grounds as a security measure.
A Recurring Pattern of Misconduct at This Fair
This is reportedly not the first time workers at the Hazareshwar Mela have faced allegations of bullying and hooliganism. Videos documenting their unruly behaviour have gone viral on social media on previous occasions as well. This latest incident again came to light through circulating footage, and police are now working to piece together the full sequence of events using the available video evidence.
