A fresh, tragic incident involving toxic gas inside a well has occurred in the Balaghat district of Madhya Pradesh, claiming the lives of two individuals. The mishap took place in Pipartola, a village under the Dahedi Gram Panchayat, within the limits of the Kirnapur police station. Reports indicate that two farmers ventured into the well to repair a malfunctioning irrigation motor pump. However, they were overwhelmed by methane and other toxic gases accumulated inside the well. The inhalation of these lethal fumes, combined with drowning, led to their untimely deaths.
Fatal attempt to repair a motor pump
According to the information available, the two farmers, 45-year-old Mahesh Bharat Lal Choudhary Marar and 55-year-old Yuvraj Chandan Lal Bisen Kalar, had entered the well to address a technical issue with their water pump. Entering a deep, confined space without adequate safety equipment or gas testing proved to be a fatal mistake. It is reported that the concentration of toxic gas inside the well was critically high. As one farmer began to lose consciousness, the other attempted a rescue, only to be overcome by the same toxic air, leading to both men losing their lives.
SDRF operation to retrieve victims
Upon receiving notification of the incident, local law enforcement from the Kirnapur police station responded immediately. The State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) and the Home Guard team were dispatched from Balaghat to manage the rescue operation. After an intense effort carried out late into the night, the rescue team successfully retrieved the bodies of the victims from the well and handed them over to the police. The bodies are slated for post-mortem examinations. This unfortunate event has left the local community in a state of shock and mourning.
Third such tragedy in three days
This incident marks the third fatal occurrence in Madhya Pradesh within the last three days where individuals have succumbed to toxic gas while inside a well. Over this brief period, four people have lost their lives, and two others have sustained injuries. It is noteworthy that a similar distressing report arrived just six days ago from Kharmseda village in the Maihar district. Within Balaghat district itself, another incident in the Bharveli police station area resulted in the death of a farmer named Ashok Marar, with two others, including his nephew, left injured. Additionally, a woman had also lost her life to toxic well gas in the Kirnapur area recently. During this farming season, as farmers frequently descend into wells to maintain their irrigation pumps, these incidents highlight a pattern of dangerous accidents occurring due to a lack of proper safety protocols.
