The footprint of Left-Wing extremism in Maharashtra's Gadchiroli district has witnessed a significant decline over the years. Following the government surrender policy introduced back in several years ago in 2005, numerous armed cadres have chosen to lay down their arms before law enforcement agencies. To facilitate the proper rehabilitation of these individuals and help them integrate into regular societal frameworks, a dedicated initiative named Project Sanjeevani is currently being implemented.
Financial Assistance and Land Distribution
Efforts to counter insurgency are continuously matched by comprehensive rehabilitation protocols for those who opt to abandon violence. In line with this framework, 14 surrendered Maoist members were officially granted land plots under Project Sanjeevani on September 1, 2026. Additionally, financial assistance cheques were distributed to several other former cadres as part of the ongoing state support package.
Rising Surrender Numbers Across the District
According to data released by the Gadchiroli Police, a cumulative total of 819 Maoists have surrendered to authorities in the district to date. Under the comprehensive rehabilitation guidelines established by the Maharashtra government, these individuals receive various forms of state assistance, including land allocations, housing support, employment assistance, and healthcare facilities to ensure a stable transition.
Steady Progress in Plot Approvals
Through close coordination between the district administration and the local police force, a total of 174 land plots have been sanctioned so far for the rehabilitation of surrendered cadres. Out of these, 153 plots had already been distributed previously, while 14 additional members received their property allocations on Tuesday. Furthermore, eligible individuals were issued official driving licenses to aid in securing legitimate employment.
Support for Children and Education
The rehabilitation proceedings also placed considerable emphasis on the welfare of the families and children of the former cadres. During the distribution event, bicycles and essential educational kits comprising learning materials were handed over to the children to encourage and support their schooling.
Core Objective of Social Integration
Both the police administration and local governance bodies emphasized that these targeted welfare schemes are designed to offer a secure, dignified, and violence-free future. By granting these opportunities, the authorities aim to permanently bridge the gap and bring former insurgents safely back into the national mainstream.
