In an effort to set a strong precedent for road safety, authorities in Latur, Maharashtra, penalized 58 of their own police personnel for riding two-wheelers without helmets. The punitive action covers multiple officers who failed to wear head protection while operating motorcycles. This initiative was rolled out ahead of the district-wide implementation making helmet usage mandatory starting September 1, aiming to curb rising road accidents and fatalities through strict enforcement.
No Exemptions Within the Police Force
Latur SP Amol Tambe issued firm directives stating that police personnel will not receive any special exemptions regarding traffic regulations. He emphasized that individuals tasked with upholding the law must lead by example and comply with rules first. SP Amol Tambe stated that enforcing the law is our duty, and therefore we must be the first ones to follow the rules.
Internal Monitoring of Police Stations
Since taking charge as the Latur SP, Amol Tambe instructed the traffic branch to initiate disciplinary measures from within the department against anyone driving without a helmet. Officers and staff members who arrive at police stations on two-wheelers without adequate headgear face strict penalties and administrative action.
Violations Recorded in Official Service Books
To date, 58 police officers have been slapped with fines for flouting helmet norms. In a significant administrative move, the police department mandated that details of this penal action must be entered into the employees' service books, making the traffic violation a permanent part of their official service records.
Mandatory Compliance Across All 23 Stations
SP Amol Tambe directed the heads of all 23 police stations across Latur district to verify that every officer and staff member commuting by motorcycle wears a helmet. Any personnel found arriving without proper gear faces standard monetary fines alongside departmental action and service book entries. Incidents elsewhere in the state have previously highlighted safety concerns, such as an instance involving a traffic policeman being assaulted on the Mumbai-Ahmedabad highway in the Kashimara area, as well as an unfortunate accident where a Mumbai traffic policeman lost his life after falling from a local train at Mulund station.
