A harrowing attack on law enforcement has surfaced from the Mhaswad area of Maharashtra's Satara district, where an on-duty policeman was dragged along the road by an illegal sand transporter. Constable Mahavir Kokre was grievously injured on Sunday evening after intercepting an unregistered dumper truck hauling sand. When the officer attempted to halt the fleeing vehicle, the driver accelerated regardless, dragging the policeman along the tarmac for nearly 1 kilometre before fleeing the initial spot.
Routine Patrol Interception Escalates into Violence
The violent altercation unfolded on Sunday evening while Mahavir Kokre was carrying out routine patrols on his motorcycle across the Mhaswad town area. During his surveillance round, Kokre spotted a suspicious commercial dumper operating without any mandatory registration number plates. Sensing illegal activity, the constable steered his motorbike ahead of the heavy vehicle and signaled the driver to pull over immediately.
Upon inspecting the cargo bed, Kokre discovered that the truck was transporting sand without visible clearance. He subsequently directed the driver to produce a valid transport permit and legal licensing documents for the mineral consignment. Instead of cooperating, the driver initiated an aggressive verbal argument with the officer. Moments later, the driver abruptly cranked the engine and attempted to speed away from the checkpoint.
Dragged Along Roadway as Dumper Flees
Refusing to let the suspect flee, Constable Kokre made an immediate effort to block the getaway vehicle, grabbing hold of the dumper cabin door or side frame. Disregarding the officer's safety, the driver slammed on the accelerator and sped off, dragging the clinging policeman for roughly 1 kilometre across the road. Kokre sustained severe injuries from the impact and friction before the harrowing ordeal concluded.
Emergency medical assistance was arranged, and the grievously injured constable was rushed to a nearby hospital for urgent medical care. Once stabilized, Kokre provided his official statement detailing the attack, prompting the Mhaswad police to register a criminal case. Following swift investigative sweeps, law enforcement teams tracked down and apprehended two accused individuals tied to the dumper assault.
Police authorities have widened their ongoing investigation beyond the direct assault. Interrogators are actively questioning the two arrested suspects to establish the exact ownership of the seized dumper truck and unearth the broader illicit sand mining and distribution ring operating across Satara district.
