With the monsoon commencing its withdrawal journey, a severe drought crisis has begun gripping wide rural swathes of Maharashtra. The Uddhav Thackeray-led Shiv Sena-UBT has mounted a fierce attack on the state administration, alleging that while farmers across Marathwada, North Maharashtra, and Vidarbha are facing desperate conditions due to dry spells, ruling coalition figures are indulging in lavish lifestyles. Asserting that more than half of the state's populace is reeling under drought shadows, the opposition warned that fear, severe thirst, and hunger threaten rural life if decisive governance continues to remain absent from the ground.
The Nanded Meeting and the Row Over Refreshments
The opposition drew attention to an official review gathering held at a rest house in Nanded, where Agriculture Minister Dattatraya Bharne had arrived to evaluate drought conditions across the Marathwada belt. Photographs showed ministers, legislators, and parliamentarians consuming cashews, almonds, and dried fruits prior to stepping out to inspect parched agricultural lands. Calling this act a cruel insult to cultivators ruined by water scarcity, the party pointed out the sheer insensitivity of enjoying dry fruits while growers cry out for basic survival. Strong objections were also raised against Parliamentarian Bandu Jadhav for publicly defending the consumption of luxury snacks during crisis reviews, accompanied by sharp jibes questioning political priorities following allegations involving transactions of 50 crore rupees.
Scrutiny Over Devendra Fadnavis's Response
Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis also drew severe criticism for his stance regarding the controversy. Reacting to the matter, the Chief Minister remarked that consuming cashews and almonds during such meetings was improper, that the administrative machinery must maintain sensitivity, and that the opposition is habituated to politicising every development. Critiquing this explanation, the opposition stated that the leadership conveniently shifted total blame onto bureaucratic officers rather than accepting political accountability. While the Chief Minister maintained that cabinet meetings have discussed the calamity extensively and that formal crop inspections followed by direct financial compensation will commence once primary district reviews conclude, critics questioned the credibility of assurances that yield little immediate relief on the ground.
Extensive Crop Destruction and Looming Rural Distress
Agricultural devastation has reached alarming levels across multiple regions, with standing crops drying up entirely. Cultivators are witnessing soybean plantations scorching under harsh weather conditions, leaving growers weeping helplessly along their farm boundaries. Rural households now face a grave scarcity of cattle fodder, severe shortages of potable water, disrupted schooling for children, delayed weddings, and struggling domestic kitchens. Drawing a sharp contrast with grand events where thousands of oil lamps were lit to commemorate the Prime Minister's birthday, the critique questioned whether symbolic celebrations could disperse the looming drought shadow, especially when public representatives display indulgence during severe agricultural despair.
Calls for Special Assembly Session and Financial Compensation
To confront the emergency without delay, Shiv Sena-UBT has urged the state government to convene a special session of the legislative assembly dedicated entirely to drought deliberations. It proposed setting aside partisan politics to establish an all-party task force focused solely on drought mitigation. Backing suggestions earlier voiced by Sharad Pawar, the party demanded an immediate statewide declaration of drought without waiting for procedural red tape or technical norms. Specific relief demands placed before the administration include an outright financial grant of 50 thousand rupees per hectare for ruined farmlands, a complete one-time agricultural loan waiver, a full waiver of academic fees for affected students, and the urgent setup of dedicated fodder camps to protect livestock.
